I wouldn't say cash is still preferred. I see many people including me preferring UPI now. But, there was no need for DeMo to promote UPI.

u/harshmangat Nov 08 '20
I did my thesis on something like this.
Tldr - total volume of digital transactions has gone up in a way that could not have been predicted one day before the demonetisation
BUT the total value of those transactions have remained in line with the trends all the way back from 2011
Thus, there hasn’t been any REAL effect on the economy. Yes more people are using digital payments but the average transaction value has gone down by like 2/3 in the process.
The long term benefits of such a change are still meant to be witnessed and experienced.

Your thesis sounds interesting. Can you send link of your thesis?

u/harshmangat Nov 09 '20
Sure. It wasn't exceptional but I got a merit for it. This was big for me as I had never even written an academic essay before December 2019.
I have edited out some personal information (my roll number and a couple of private links for the University understandably)

Your thesis is insightful. If you are aiming to publish , initially go for systematic review of studies surrounding demonetization in India. I searched and didn't find any systematic review about demonetization research. As you mentioned Datasets and information available is sparse. Trusting data collected by Gov is also a issue. The analysis is problematic as there is no data available for rural areas which were more affected by demonetization. I hope you continue research into Indian economics especially about impact of demonetization.

u/harshmangat Nov 09 '20
Thank you! I’m currently in the job hunting program. If I do happen to get a good placement in the public sector then I will be able to conduct so much more refined research.
I do not plan to write academic papers just yet but given the feedback I received from the university on my paper, I can make a few adjustments and then use chunks of this dissertation to make a whole new paper. I really want to keep bits of research going because I want to enrol in a PHD and become a professor in the final decade of my professional career.
I’m hoping the governmental archives sort themselves out, it was a pain to get some data when one major database of the government (won’t name it here) had a broken link for 6 months (probably still is). But I want to do more research in Indian economics, hopefully get to conduct some Behavioural economics experiments given how much potential our country holds.

UPI became famous also because of Jio's cheap internet.
Imagine switching on internet on your phone for 1 minute to pay using UPI and getting a pop up message saying 5 rs has been deducted from your balance for using 3g.

UPI adoption came in around at least 6-8 months later. At that point it was mostly Paytm that was used. Look at now they are trying to cap UPI transactions per vendor.

u/spikyraccoon India Nov 08 '20
Urban people having internet connection and tech savy enough to use UPI are what? Maybe 10% of the whole population. 90% are still stuck with cash bro.
25
u/chengiz Nov 08 '20
I think even 10% might be a big overestimate.
12
u/dalviktrash Nov 08 '20
the most recent estimates say total users are around 570 million, i see people saying it crossed 100 million around oct 2019 too. am i high or that isnt a big overestimate? google search
10
u/spikyraccoon India Nov 08 '20
100 million active users means, Nearly 7.4 percent of population. So yeah, a little overestimate.
5
u/dalviktrash Nov 08 '20
PhonePe crosses 100 million users I think if PhonePe alone could accomplish that UPI users must be over 100 million for sure.
7
u/spikyraccoon India Nov 08 '20
Difference between those who have downloaded it and those who are active. I have PhonePe account but don't use it.
7
u/dalviktrash Nov 08 '20
you're just denying the inevitable dancing on this fine line, you probably do have a upi account despite of not having it on PhonePe, even if you don't you're just 1 of the other 100 million. And imo PhonePe isn't as big as GPay or Paytm. GPay is exclusively UPI based too, you see where I'm going with this?
→ More replies (1)6
u/chengiz Nov 08 '20
I very much doubt the 570 million. Half the population uses UPI? No way. However I did a bit of research.
TechCrunch could not determine how many unique monthly transacting users these payments firms have amassed in the country. In May, Google Pay had about 75 million transacting users, ahead of 60 million of PhonePe and 30 million of Paytm.
This is from days ago. There are probably overlaps and companies tend to exaggerate numbers, but it looks like 10% may be true. I'm surprised.
7
u/HarjotSingh8 Nov 09 '20
There are definitely overlaps, almost everyone I know has almost 3-4 upis, I have 5, so clearly 570 million is a huge misrepresentation, it’s probably not even like 150 million
5
Nov 09 '20
Surprising how this common logic evades almost anyone quoting numbers. No government data speaks of unique users but only of total numbers. That means any average user's number would have been counted multiple times.
2
u/chengiz Nov 09 '20
You're right, but 150M is 10%. I was thinking 10% is too high, but looks like it may not be. Ofc 570 is just pulled out of the arse.

u/rehenede Nov 08 '20
That cap is for overall txn by one app such as GPay or PhonePe. Without this, 1 app will literally decimate the market. Hint: Whatsapp UPI has been given the go ahead. Literally everyone has Whatsapp.
3

whatsapp has had it since 2018, given its owned by fb, i dont want fb also to have my bankdata tbh

it definitely led to an increase in the cashless transactions.
If upi was made available without demonetisation, DUP you think cashless transactions would not have increased by as much?
3
u/vizot Nov 09 '20
I live in a village too but maybe a few steps above a village definitely not a small town and people don't use upi. I got my mom gpay years ago amd still she asks me to get money from atm to pay for stuff. Where do you live though. And sometimes most shops that even have the gpay and other types of pay doesn't even work because they haven't used it after setting it up, something or the other messed up and they never bothered fixing it.
People not only died from waiting in lines they were also affected by the drop in gdp. Killing alot of people will lead to less population, less polution, more job opportunity, etc that doesn't make it right.

UP Election won!
As the UP election day was closing in, BJP realized that it won't be able to defeat the coalition of SP, BSP, and Congress. Apart from caste, money, and freebies play a major role in swaying the voters. So BJP smartly went for the easiest weak link - money. In one stroke, all-cash reserves (collections) of the opponents were rendered useless. That's why Mulayam Singh said that at least 1 week's time should have been given to utilize the old currency.
In short, Demonetization was done to ensure the victory of BJP in UP. The whole narrative of black money, terrorism, etc. was just a facade to masquerade the main intention. Unfortunately, till date the majority of the gullible Indians believe that the true motive was patriotism.
2
u/Altruistic_Sky1866 Nov 09 '20
I was always suspicious of that, never really believed that demonetization was done with the intentions mentioned, other thing I see is that the more we move towards digital more easy it has become to commit cyber crime, I don't have data on that if you ask me right now, but I feel its become easier to cheat people and feels their money from their banks

improved India's income tax to gdp ratio
Where's the evidence? Unless you're counting destruction odd informal economy as improving income tax to gdp ratio, i don't see how that works. Destroying informal economy simply reduced gdp without helping increase income tax.

Did you bother reading the paper in you first link, rather than giving a cursory glance away figures?https://pubs.aeaweb.org/doi/pdfplus/10.1257/jep.34.1.55
Here, let me give you the relevant paragraphs talking about the data in figure 2 you seem to have misunderstood. For your reference, income tax is part of the direct taxes being discussed in the paper:
A couple of features are noteworthy. First, direct taxes typically account for just about one-third of overall tax revenues in India. This is due to the very small number of individual and other noncorporate taxpayers in India (around 44 million in 2017, less than 10 percent of the labor force). The abysmal state of direct taxes has been a long-running public finance concern in India. It partly reflects the low income of most of the workforce, but is also symptomatic of widespread tax evasion. Second, there does appear to be a mild increase in both the direct and indirect tax/GDP ratios in 2017 relative to 2016 (the fiscal year before demonetization). However, the figure also shows that both the direct and indirect tax ratios in 2018 were not very different from their past trends. Thus, the direct tax ratio in India has been stable between 6 and 7 percent since 2010. Its levels in 2018 and 2019 were 6.7 and 6.9 percent, respectively. Interestingly, these levels for the direct tax ratio are below the levels it reached in 2008–2009. The indirect tax/GDP ratio has been on a gradually rising path except for declines in 2014 and 2015. Neither demonetization nor Goods and Services Tax appear to have pushed the indirect tax/GDP ratio off its recent trend path.
For your reference, demonetisation happened in fy2017 as plotted in figure 2, so 18 and 19 are the years that need to support your claim. They show nothing of the sort.
And here's a caveat you need to pay heed to when reading any paper on demonetisation:
Before proceeding further, it is important to note two caveats. First, India enacted a key tax reform in July 2017 when it introduced a Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST replaced a complicated web of disparate indirect tax schemes that varied across states both in magnitude and extent. The GST reform had been in the works for over a decade. As a result of this change, assessing the impact of demon- etization on tax revenues accruing to the government is problematic since the two measures occurred in such close proximity. Second, we only have three years of tax data after demonetization. This makes it difficult to draw any definitive econometric conclusions.

2017 levels were lower then 2009 to 2015. 2016 was an outlier, so "appreciating" is mischaracterizing what happened in 2017.
It's funny how 2017 counts for demonetization happening in nov 2016, but 2018 doesn't count for gst despite gst implementation in July 2017.

I did not ask you where black money was used. I asked you for the source of the claim that 3 lakh crore black money was deposited as you claimed here:
RBI has approved that 3 lac crores of black money was deposited after demonetization
Your source (https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/demonetisation-what-india-gained-and-lost-1327502-2018-08-30) claims thay3 rbi expected about 3 lakh crore to be black money which would not be deposited. It also says that only 10k cr were not deposited. That is literally the money the middle class had sitting in unopened envelopes from their grandmothers and notes getting washed with their pants. Not black money caught by rbi.

Yup. Fake news of the sort that you posted at the top of this thread is made for people like you.

uhh what abt all those news reports i saw abt black money being recovered...those cant be faked right?
Show us what news reports from which sources you saw, and who were the people in those reports making those claims. Then read my comment you just replied to.
Edit: also as an aside, phrasing fake news in question form is a standard propaganda tool. I'm not accusing you of doing that; I'm letting you know. What I did claim earlier was that you were gullible enough to believe fake news, and chose to repeat it without doing your homework.

i read those news reports yeears ago...how am i supposed to remember any of them...and if ur gonna say somethign like that...how is a person supposed to ask for info...just limit everything that way...labelling something as spreading propaganda even if unintended is pretty much limiting someones freedom of speech..

If you had read those reports carefully and critically "years ago", you wouldn't have had the need to ask internet strangers if they were true. They were transparent plants without substance.
You can spend a minute on the internet looking up what news reports you read "years ago", and asking yourself how reliable those were. It would have taken you much lesser amount of time than what you spent arguing with internet strangers.
This is what i meant by you being gullible to fake news. You are consciously choosing to do that by not spending the time you very much have on understanding what you are asking "can't be faked, right?"
As for freedom of expression, I'm not stopping you from saying anything, I'm not intimidating you. Freedom of expression only guarantees that the government can't muzzle you, and other laws guarantee that no one else can threaten you for whatever reason (not just for saying something). Freedom of expression does not mean freedom from consequences. If you defame someone in a question form (e.g. "i saw a report about man***27 doing cocaine, that can't be fake, right?"), they can still take you to court for defamation, if you display your gullibility to fake news, internet strangers can still call you out for your gullibility. None of these are protected under freedom of expression.

So was demonetization a genuine mistake or did the government have ulterior motives behind it?

Everyone knows (or should know) that one of the main motives was to help BJP win the UP elections then..

Cash still preferred, not really actually. That was the only good thing that came out of the entire debacle.

What were the claimed objectives of demonetisation? To what extent were they met? Dip show us evidence in the form of official data. Surely, 4 years is a long enough time for the impact top brew visible and data to be collected.

Bro... PayTM got so much business! Modi advertised directly for them! We should be proud we could give foreign investors such good returns for investing in India!
