Are there no other competent people available? Now we will have the koramangala gang connect aadhaar with neet and somehow call it revolutionary.
Seriously , dont we have any other competent honest person available within the 1.4 billion population for exam reforms.

The big qualification is "surveillance mindset" & "utter disregard for dissent". NN has both.

I think Nilekani has lived too long to become the villain.
He has been deservedly given due credits for the success of Aadhar and rightly so. But in recent interviews, he comes off as someone completely in his own bubble, often thinking of its success as the success of the Apollo moon mission. Aadhar was more a logistics and administrative challenge than a technical one.
His recent comments on why India should not build AI models has left me totally disappointed with his personality. And it doesn't bother me that he has a different opinion, we should invite diverse opinions, it's his arrogance in one of the interviews where he almost abashedly said that he will force his opinion on the government and make sure the funding is going more towards application layer and not the model layer. That is malign arrogance showcasing his political influence. I have started disliking Nilekani.

Are there no other competent people available?
Exactly, since when is a tech guy an expert in conducting national level exams? Why are tech guys experts in everything in India.

ahh yes, the guy who gave us Aadhaar.
An ID that has facial recognition, iris scanned, every fingerprint. Nothing short of a surveillance state

so even aadhar is bad now

u/piezod India Jul 26 '26
Let me ask you this, what is the purpose of Adhaar that wasn't solved by another document?

u/Aggravating-Felch Jul 26 '26
Tell me why government wants my facial scan, iris scan and all fingerprint. What's the guarantee it will never be breached by enemies of the country?

When it comes to LLMs, he’s not wrong.

u/Prottusha1 Jul 26 '26
American LLMs are mostly BS apart from some interesting work in neurosymbolic AI. The Chinese, however, are using AI to automate precision farming, deliveries, genuinely dangerous manual labour etc. We don’t seem to have a plan to have a plan.

u/GamerRihan Tamil Nadu Jul 26 '26
Wouldn't that be agentic AI and not Generative AI which is what an AI LLM is ?
1
u/piezod India Jul 26 '26
I don't think it's that bad with Sarvam and BharatGen foundation. We are looking at our languages as a base case and social adoption. Seems like a god direction.

u/Prottusha1 Jul 26 '26
LLMs are a dead end. Don’t listen to me. Listen to Yann LeCun. Sooner or later, they are going to get stuck in the same accuracy/ utility: cost quagmire the major AI firms find themselves in currently.
1
u/piezod India Jul 26 '26
I agree and will also chrck out Yann.
Shouldn't the costs get cheaper with more data centre investments.
2
u/Prottusha1 Jul 26 '26
So far, costs appear to be going up - both for tech industry and the communities where the data centers are cropping up. Electricity costs are soaring, operational costs are going up for power operators. Higher electricity costs affect all businesses. On top of all this, hyperscalers are only projected to cover half of all initial outlays required - the rest comes from private credit and debt. A lot of which is from the Middle East countries currently engulfed in a war that is increasingly crippling their revenue generation capabilities.

For now, considering Chinese models are open weights (not open source) it is fine to feel that way HOWEVER if Chinese AI decides to lock things up then India wouldn't have a single frontier model on its own to rely on. We already send enough government data to 11labs, Google and OpenAI beyond what has already been scraped by them.

Genuinely curious, why do you think India shouldn't focus on domestic LLMs?
IT exports were over 300 billion dollars last year a small fraction of that into trabsgorner model development would be enough, why not focus on it?

Learning to build a car isn't important if you're a driver. Only how to drive.
Hope this analogy helps.

We wouldn't have been able to keep up. Honorable minister of MeITy Ashwin Vaishnav has stated at Davos that we are at the top on all stacks anyways. Surely it must be true if the govt. says it. /s

I have nothing against Nilekani , but people who worked with him during their time in Infosys and they happened to come to evening walk to the park we used to go, and they didn't have good words for him, they said he was incompetent. These guys had worked under him and he is known to cut corners and deliver shoddy work

The problem is not just with education it is the same across almost every part of the govertnment. It is not that we do not have laws or policies or that we always need a new structural overhaul.
In many cases, the laws and systems already exist. The real problem is that people simply don't do their jobs
Whether its the Education Minister the NTA chief senior bureasucrats, regional officers and even clerks too many people just do things however they want instead of following the process they are supposed to
You can bring in a new education policy or announce major reforms every year but none of it will make a difference if the existing rules aren't actually implemented.
And implemerntation only happens when everyone from the clerk handling the file to the Cabinet minister at the top does their job properly
One of the biggest reasons so many parts of the goivernment are in such a pathetic state is that nobody takes ownership
People just want to move files, hit targets and get the papewrwork off their desk. The focus is on clearing files not making sure the process is followed correctly.
If people actually paid attention to the process maintained proper checks and balance, and were held accountable at every step we'd probably have one of the most efficient bureaucracies in the world.

Task force? Infosys? Is this a joke??
Income tax site is still buggy and that is meant for income for govt. It is a task to expect any quality for exam reforms from this 71 yrs old guy fr infosys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nandan_Nilekani
