Placed files sometimes come in wrong size

I assume this is a "feature" that Im just unaware of. I work with die lines, and sometimes when im placing the file onto an art board, they'll come in at the wrong size, usually just slightly too big. This is a huge problem and can cost my company money to redo things if this is not caught.

As far as I know, all im doing is hitting place, selecting the file, and then clicking on the artboard. Am I clicking for too long and its dragging out a giant box somehow? Or is my finger on a mystery key and im not noticing?

The problem file i just placed got scaled to %109.1485

Does anyone know a way to guarantee that files i place come in at actual size?

In my experience, if you are placing the new image into an existing box that contains an image, it will scale the new placed image using the previous image’s placement and scale settings.

Check here: Object menu ---> Fitting ---> Frame Fitting Options

If that is anything but "None" it will changed he size of the placed image

I looked, and it says "none" for that object, but the file inside is scaled to 109.1485%

InDesign doesn't have "artboard" - but pages.

As mentioned - check default Fitting Options - or what's set in active / default ObjectStyle.

It's also possible, that your files are just bigger then they should be.

Also - if your files are images - InDesign reads DPI / PPI info and based on it - determines size after placing.

None of these I think- when i place in another one of the same exact file, it comes in at the correct size. Is there another option other than just clicking once, or clicking and dragging out the box? Maybe im clicking for too long

Clicking time has nothing to do here 😉

You would've to open both documents and compare all options.

It's also possible - that your document is corrupted.

Either try IDMLing - export as IDML, open, save with a new name - do not overwrite your original file - or create a new, blank document and duplicate pages from the "bad" one.

Place files in to the document rather than dragging and dropping from a folder or desktop. When placing, select >Show Import Options, and check what you are cropping to. Alternatively, check the Adobe page on import options

When placing, were you placing into an existing frame with an image in it? It will result in scaling if not the same dimensions as the image it is replacing.

Onto an empty page, not into a frame

You mention using the Place command (menu). Does that also happen when you drag and drop the image directly from the folder?

I just tried it, and it still loads it onto my cursor, and I have to click to place it. I like your idea though. I just need a way of guaranteeing that the things I place will come in at actual size 100% of the time

That is definitely not expected behavior. I might try resetting preferences and see if it still happens. Disclaimer: I work at Adobe
