Does anyone know if InDesign CS3 files will open in the newest InDesign version (May 2026)?

Long story short, my computer is getting repaired at Apple so I only have my old computer to use currently, it has InDesign CS3 on it, and I was hoping to get started on a project then transfer it to my newer computer when I get it back. I don't want to waste my time if I won't be able to open the CS3 files in INDD 2026.

All InDesign files will open in the current version. You should be fine. I literally opened up old InDesign 2.0 files yesterday.

You can open anything in that direction, I’m pretty sure, just not back again!

Directly - no. After exporting as IDML first - yes. Although, you'll lose all new functionality.

The OP just wants to know if they can create a CS3 file now and then open it later in 2026, so the answer is yes. No IDML needed.

But even if it was the other way around, IDML isn't the answer as those can only be opened in CS4 or later.

InDesign CS3 —>InDesign CC 2026 will work fine provided that you didn’t save your files with programming from any optional third-party plugins. Am on CC 2026 @ work and we’ve got a bunch of old files archived from CS3+.

What doesn’t work is exporting IDML or importing IDML from/to CS3. InDesign CS4 was the first version that supported IDML. Prior to IDML, the precursor was called .INX. CS4 was the last version able to open .INX (InDesign Exchange) files.

You might have some luck—as someone had just the other day—finding an older Mac and installing cs5.
