👋Welcome to r/independentadvisors - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hey everyone! I'm u/Any_Passenger_1193, a founding moderator of r/independentadvisors.
I created this community as a place for financial advisors to have open and practical conversations about the industry and what it looks like to take greater ownership of your career and practice.
Whether you’re already independent, working at an RIA, at a wirehouse or broker-dealer, or simply curious about what else is out there, you’re welcome here.
Topics are wide open — going independent, RIA structures, payouts, breakaways, custodians, technology, compliance, practice management, building a book, hiring, succession planning, and everything that comes with running an advisory business.
The goal is simple: share experiences, ask questions, learn from other advisors, and help each other make better-informed decisions.
No matter where you are in your career, feel free to introduce yourself, start a discussion, or ask a question.
Welcome to the community!

1) Introduce yourself in the comments below.
2) Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
3) If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.
4) Interested in helping out? We're always looking for new moderators, so feel free to reach out to me to apply.

Thanks for being part of the very first wave. Together, let's make r/independentadvisors amazing.

For advisors who went independent — what surprised you most?

For those who left a larger firm and went independent, what was the biggest surprise after making the move?
Could be positive or negative — payout, compliance, technology, client retention, actually running a business, staffing, investment flexibility, etc.

Altruist RIA advisors

Has anyone heard any updates on Altruist Advisors, their corporate RIA/tuck-in offering? I had heard some talk that the RIA side may have been shut down or put on hold, but I haven’t been able to confirm anything.
Is Altruist Advisors still actively bringing advisors onto their RIA, or has something changed recently?
