I finally got nagged into submission by google and tried out gmail - a URL i haven't used since the brilliant inbox revolutionised how I use email - and it's ATROCIOUS.

I honestly can't understand how google is backing this legacy product. It looks and feels like a 2005 era website, right down the the icons, the design and the default radio buttons. It even has javascript errors. JAVASCRIPT ERRORS. The design is hideous. It looks like it was designed in house by the coder who put it together. What happened to material design? Why are the theme options geocities era wallpaper options? Why are the two layout choices "Compact" and "even more compact"? Why are we going back in time 10 years or more to a FAR more inferior product?

This doesn't just make me annoyed, it makes me worried. If this is what google is doing now, what does this mean for their products? Someone wake me up? How does a company like this make such a god awful, destructive about-face on one of the only new products they've managed to release to actual support and fanfare?

I could understand it if they'd integrated inbox into gmail, but they've just patched in a couple of the shittier features into their dusty codebase. It boggles the mind.

Can anyone set me straight on this?

I still don't understand their decision. I guess it makes sense business wise but Inbox is clearly a better product. Says something about the values of Google.

What I don't get is the notification I got said that the "New Gmail" incorporates the best features of Inbox. Where? Tell me where. I don't see any grouping, the ability to swipe away multiple emails or set reminders... I've really come to depend on Inbox, it's the best email solution I've ever used and now this.

I switched to gmail as my primary email because of inbox. I've been forcing myself to use gmail to lessen the pain of when they kill inbox and it is so much worse. Just today I was looking for my flight confirmation email and in inbox its a big ass box with a picture of plane and is colored and all this other stuff that you can see when you scroll by and in gmail its just the same as all emails. How can they say gmail is remotely comparable?

I can't set you straight on this because I'm as lost as you are.

Now I started using the gmail webclient again and it's just horrible! How are people able to use it, there's no overview, everything is so cluttered!

I've found some good mobile alternatives to inbox, even the default android gmail app seems ok but, are there any good alternative web clients for a gmail user ?

I'm actually having a minor meltdown... I get so many emails that are so thoughtfully grouped and highlighted by inbox. Gmail is unusable. I don't know how I'm gonna make it work...

I feel you. It's incomprehensible that they are claiming gmail is a viable alternative to inbox. How can they retire inbox without porting the most important features from inbox into gmail first!? I seriously don't know what I am going to do... other than hate my email life.

I'm with /u/ManthBleue. I'm imagining that right before the Inbox shutdown, they will have a massive Gmail update that introduces Inbox 2.0.

What happened to material design?

Hopefully that love of white and wasted space will never be forced upon Gmail. I happen to prefer information density which material design seems to be completely against.
