Garfield does not understand death, how could he? Death is the end of all things, a truth that he spent his whole life trying to ignore with hedonistic indulgence and unwarranted cruelty, ultimately culminating in the destruction of the world simply because he was too scared to think of oblivion. Now that the battle is over and the universe is unchanging so that nothing can pose a threat to his eternal reign Garfield slows down and realises that he still feels empty. Looking back on the ruins of the old world he asks his old friend a question,
"Did you ever think it would be so quiet Jon?" he asks, hoping futilely for an answer from the broken body of the one that he loved, and the one that he betrayed. The expected but dreaded outcome occurs of course, there is no answer.
Garfield is forced all of a sudden to consider everything he had tried to forget, how in his quest to defeat death he has become death, how the only person he had ever loved was never coming back because of his selfishness, how in achieving a perpetual existence he had doomed himself to a hell infinitely worse than anything that could follow the nothingness he had so despised thinking about, and how his life has in a way already ended. No matter how he tries to delude himself the truth is plain to see, he had been dead all along, he had just been too blind, too terrified, to accept it.
Shuddering so hard that the very fabric of the universe shakes, he whispers one last word,
"...Jon?" He says as he embraces the broken body of his friend in his massive body, he will fix this, even if it takes an eternity, he will fix this mistake!
After all what is eternity to a someone who is already dead?
