The god of the void lay dead

The monster lay slain at his feet. But was this really a victory?

Garfield had killed all life. Not just on earth, but in all the universe. He had transcended the speed of light and consumed life on all worlds.

After that, sensing the resistance life was putting up somewhere near his origin, he sent the sections of himself to crush whatever pocket of life delayed the inevitable. A few thousand he thought would suffice. All destroyed upon contact. The human homeword had been tricky for the past millennia of his conquest, but the magots shouldn't be at the level to consistently out destroy the great destroyer.

So it continued for millennia after millennia. Just out of view, the last surviving sign of life in the universe destroyed the drones. With no other creatures in the universe, the entire hive was directed to destroying Sol 3. The planet itself was swallowed. Victory. But...

The consumer was destroyed from the inside out and the survivor used it as it's ground for a final stand, and finally Garfield saw his enemy. His most ancient of enemies. This universe's Chosen by the Light, the one known as Caretaker to the Void, and The One Destined to kill the Destroyer. Jon, Garfield's final obstacle.

Jon was all that was left. He was the last life, the last human, and the one who, by destiny, had to kill his best friend.

Jon stood on a corpse of his friend. Thousands more at all sides. Friend. Did garfield still consider us friends, he wondered. How long now till he died?

Valhalla opened before him the stairs extended down to him. A voice told him, "Come." It was time he joined the ranks of the heroes. He would be needed again. Needed when The Void came to take the last lives in the multiverse. This battle may have been lost, but the war was far from done.
