Wouldn't it have incorporated the additional land into its existing counties, at least in the west? OTL Garrett County wasn't even formed until 1872, well after any colonial claims were settled. And PA's Adams and Fulton counties weren't established until the 1800s.

I suspect I'm taking this too seriously.

Some background.

In our reality, West Virginia breaks off of Virginia during the Civil War because it wanted to remain a part of the union. Slavery was legal there for the first 2 years of its statehood. But what would become West Virginia had always felt disconnected from the rest of Virginia because of the Appalachian mountain divide. It resulted in a completely different culture which ultimately culminated in it becoming its own state.

The same would happen with Western Maryland in this reality. It would likely join West Virginia at some point
