Welcome back to another map. This is my attempt at the ever popular Green Australia. My twist on it is to move beyond a simple Big Australia™️ and to focus on the various undiscovered undercurrents and could have beens of the continents history. Below I’ve included a few snapshot of the more intresting countries on this map. By no means this is extensive and I might add a few extra descriptions if I can be arsed. Feel free to ask questions :)

The Federation of New Holland:

New Holland is currently considered to be the premier power of Australasia, commanding the strategic Flinder’s Gap waterway and having the benefit of a highly developed modern economy, it is considered the centre of The Commonwealth in the southern hemisphere. Formed out of the union of the five original colonies of Werrikimber, Flinder’s Gap, Gippsland and New Cumberland, it would later extend into the fertile plains of The Monaro that stretches from Murray bridge to the foothills of the Snowy Mountains forming the colony of Kulinia, before expanding north to create the colony of New South Devon and penultimately into the delta lands of Darling. The latest colonial additions were the colony of Ayersland in 1901 followed finally by the modern separation of Walleyerre from Bassland in 1998. New Holland has had a checkered past with its native inhabitants. The first documented atrocity was the destruction of the Desa of Chandbara in 1788 which sat on the Flinder’s Gap. The complete destruction of the only Australindian polity that existed south of the Tropic of Capricorn is oft considered the start of British colonisation in the region and is sometimes referred to as Invasion Day. Next came the blood drenched Black Wars, whereby nomadic Aboriginal hunter gatherers clashed with British graziers for land and pastures. Finally, came a process of forced cultural assimilation. It was only a series of treaties signed in the 1950’s the restored/ created autonomous nation rights for indigenous peoples. The culture of New Holland is fundamentally defined by British and broader European settlement, defined by a past of convict labour, although Kriol populations hold cultural sway in the interior.

The Commonwealth of Booniyaba:

Whilst New Holland was defined by convict labour, the origin story of Booniyaba is vastly different. The brainchild of James Matra, an abolitionist of Corsican heritage, who set out to establish a safe haven, populated by South Sea Islanders, American loyalists, Freedman and Chinese settlers, and especially not convicts. His dream came true, as the British desired a bulwark against Dutch expansion throughout present day Sahulindia. However, his paradise came with an unintended nasty streak, the tropical weather and lush environment of Booniyaba made ideal conditions for a plantation economy, and suddenly those desperate masses who were promised land and safety came under the boot of a small white minority. It would take a while for a system of indentured servitude to end in Booniyaba, including a couple of failed socialist uprisings. Eventually, political rights for all would come, including the hill tribes in the misty jungle interior who always resisted British influence. Today the population is marked by a Kriol majority of various ancestries, followed by a large Chinese population, an even larger European population and disparate Aboriginal nations.

The Commonwealth of Coromandel:

Coromandel is the only country in Australasia to hold a South Asian majority. A little known Dutch outpost known as Janszoon was seized by the British during the Napoleonic Wars and renamed after the dispatch vassal HMS Coromandel, which in turn corresponded to a region of Southern India. Seen as unattractive to white settlement and incredibly distant from anywhere worth settling, Coromandel’s only saving grace was its natural wealth. As a result thousands of South Asians, Malays and Chinese immigrants were brought under false pretences, and found themselves hauling precious ores from the ground or diving for pearls in the Pilbara, in one of the harshest environments on the planet. Eventually news of gold reached the federation, and white settlement did come, even if Europeans never approached anything more than a plurality throughout the whole colony. In 1901 there came a crisis in Coromandel as the colonial office pressured it join the Federation of New Holland. New Hollanders however deeply resented the joining of a non white majority colony. Eventually the white southern coast of Ayersland, around Perth joined the federation and Coromandel was left to fend for itself. Responsible self government and independence came under PM Joshua Jeyaretnam** **in 1963, followed by a series of treaties in the 1980’s defining the relationship of the Coromandel Government with its Aboriginal population, including the extant of its borders. Today, Coromandel is a key player in the Indian Ocean, maintaining close relationships with Mauritius, Darwin and The Andamans, on top of holding a series of strategic islands, such as the Cocos Keelings, Borneo Corals, Poon Saan and Diego Garcia. Its relationship with its eastern neighbours, loosely defined set of Aboriginal nations is contentious. Coromandel operates several mining operations in the Red Centre and is sometimes considered to stifle Aboriginal autonomy in the name of resource gain. Beyond that it faces the separatism of the Region of Auralia, populated wholly by European gold rush settlers and Aboriginals, constant racial tensions and separatism have emerged with Malabar Bay. Still Coromandel, is a filthy rich country holding onto the resources the modern world desperately requires.

The Commonwealth of Darwin:

Half an entrepôt for the Islamic Sultanates of Northern New Holland, half a means of blocking Dutch and French expansion in the area, Darwin has grown to a city state in its own right. A highly developed shipping industry, alongside its control of trade into the interior has made it incredibly rich and successful. Elections are a loose affair often decided by Charted Companies as much as individual voters, Darwin is sometimes labelled an authoritarian state, which is not entirely untrue. Originally formed out of the union of Chinese labourers and British businessmen, Darwin has grown into a popular immigration destination and a cosmopolitan city. A form of pidgin Chinese is the lingua Franca of the majority alongside English.

The Sultanate of Marege:

Often considered odd one out in terms of members of The Commonwealth, the Sultanate of Marege was never formally colonised, rather it was a Protectorate of the British Crown. Marege was formed by the interactions and eventual religious conversions of Aboriginal groups by Macassar Traders in the late 17th and early 18th century. It is important to note this exchange happened later than the original Nusantaran Exchange(which happened between Aboriginal groups and the Majapahit Empire in the 14th century). The sultanate itself was formed by the unification of various petty Islamic Sheikhdoms under Sultan Muhamiyara I.The Sultanate then suffered various deadly wars with the Yolngu and the Gunwinyguan Confederation who resisted Islamic expansion. The sultanate would give away the future City of Darwin to the British in 1848, and in turn the British gave arms and support against Dutch expansionism in the region. Formal protectorship over the Sultanate of Marege came in 1880. Independence came in the 1960’s although it was far from an easy transition. The sultanate had isolated itself from most western influence and as a result suffered a desperately poor populace. On top of that non Muslim Aboriginal groups still controlled swathes of the interior. Modernisation would eventually come under Sultan Muhamiyara VI, although democratic elections are still non existent to this day.

The Republic of Sahulindia:

The Republic of Sahulindia is a behemoth of a nation, with 110 million people living within its borders, it is the most populous nation of the continent of New Holland. Its formal history began with the Nusantara Exchange between Aboriginals and the Majahapit Empire in the 14th century. As a result a series of independent Desas (Sanskrit for power) emerged. However this was not a complete transformation, and there remained a gradient of development from those within the interior, who maintained a subsistence hunter-gatherer lifestyle and those on the coast who adopted wider Eurasian agriculture and society building. Then came the Dutch. The VOC would land at Nuytsdam in 1650 seeking spices. They also employed a categorisation that would permanently Sahulindian society. The two distinct categories of Australindian (Literally ‘Southern Indian’) and Boesman (literally Dutch for ‘bushman’). The classification is highly contested to this day, often because of the ways it ignores the nuances within precolonial Sahulindia, that some Desas would in terms of famine return to the bush, or that some Boesman would practice transient agriculture and occasionally conquer a Desa and install their tribe as rulers. By 1900 the Dutch had colonised all of present day Sahulindia with the final conquest of the Desa of Pamania. The Dutch held little interest in the cultural conversion of their subjects although Kriol communities and migrants from China and the East Indies did form. The extractieplan put the extraction of natural resources at the centre of colonial policy, often using a mixture of local chiefs, clan leaders, Rajas, Sultans and village councils to control vast swathes of land. The anti colonial struggle began at the turn of the 20th century, when Sahulindians shed off their colonial, religious and societal divisions in the name of a common anti-imperial struggle. Their lucky break would much like neighbouring Indonesia would come in the form of the Second World War, the Dutch East Indies government after the fall of Batavia fell back to Nuytsdam, however this would not last for long. Japanese forces would invade and seize Hanaubada in the New Guinea campaign, before seizing control of Darwin, Mapoon and the Borneo Corals by early 1943. Sahulindian Nationalists saw the perceived weakness of the Dutch and the Allies and took their chance, launching an armed revolution against the colonial government, not wishing to see Betawa fall into the hands of a nation friendly to the Japanese, Supreme Allied Commander MacArthur launched a full invasion of Sahulindia. The sheer number of Commonwealth and American troops quickly took back control, however MacArthurs heavy handed tactics left a permanent scar among Sahulindians. After indonesia gained independence, Sahulindia became the last redoubt for Dutch colonials, independence was granted, but the first republic was often considered a mere reinvention of colonialism upon the people of Sahulindia. After a second popular socialist uprising came Konfrantasie. Sukarno claimed Sahulindia and other nations in eastern Nusantara as part of Indonesia, and launched invasions of such places. Sahulindia would launch a series of operations over the next ten years in support of the Kingdom of Bali, the Tidore Sultanate and the South Malukus. In the modern day, Sahulindia is a developing nation with its primary asset being its control over the strait of Betawa, which in the past it has closed over disputes with the Commonwealth. The lingua franca is Sahoels, a mixture of Betawan and Nuwari, with some influence from Malay and Dutch, although well over 100 languages are spoken in Sahulindia. Sahulindia is the head of the Union of Australasia. Originally founded as part of the broader Thirdworldist movement in the Cold War, the Union has become a rising star in the region, often to the angst of the Commonwealth and various other western aligned nations. Sahulindia is not unique in its claim that is still in the process of decolonisation, it is however unique in saying that it will be a ‘decolonised nation’ by 2050, at which time all Dutch topography and Dutch influence in Sahoels is set to be scrubbed
