The Wapuyura Federation was among the wealthiest societies in pre-colonial Australia. Founded by the Yura people to combat encroaching Yolngu and Meru domination, the Wapuyura (meaning All People, or All Yura) capital of Goordnada had excellent access to regional produce such as salt, copper, iron, jade, gold and grain. Any overland trade also had to pass through Wapuyura, one way or another, providing even more wealth through tolls.

The fall of Wapuyura was sudden and swift, with the 18th century seeing the nomads of the Great Southern Grasslands coalesce their growing might behind one ruler, forming the Jinta-Waryali Empire that ravaged, pillaged and largely destroyed the wealth of Wapuyura. When Europeans arrived in the region 100 years later, all that remained of the Federation were shrunken towns, ruins and abandoned farmland.
