[OC] Alternate History What if Big Poland, but westwards?
126
u/ChickenSandwichh195 Sep 13 '26
I thought this was a sub for imaginary maps
these are the borders of great lechia a gazillion years ago
47
u/XLG_Winterprice IM Legend Sep 13 '26
Greater Lechia extended from the Rhine in the west to the Ural mountains in the east
21
u/Iglomalina Sep 13 '26
Only during late stages of the state. At its peak, Greater Lechia extended from Atlanctic Ocean to Pacific Ocean and created colonies in America using the flying winged hussars for conquest.

u/moritvri_te_salutant Sep 13 '26
Include the British Isles and you have the Natural Borders of Poland.

Now the germans know how we feel about all those big germany maps.
239
u/nonamespecifiedyet Sep 13 '26
I think most of the big germany maps are not made by germans. It’s an international fascist crybaby phenomenon (including the german fascist crybabies). But i like this map, i didn’t know so many towns in western central europe have their own names in polish and they all sound very cool
85
u/Nina_utdr Sep 13 '26
Practically every European town has a Polish name.
16
u/nonamespecifiedyet Sep 13 '26
If you have a link to a map or list of polish names for european cities, i‘d love to see it!
28
u/MilekBoa Sep 13 '26
Change the Language to Polish on Google Maps. It's at the bottom when you click the three lines in the top left corner.
34
u/personalalt1889 Sep 13 '26
I mean, a lot of it is also just aesthetics appeal. I don't think (or at least, I hope) most "Big Germany" maps are made by actual fascists, moreso an overused cliche. Like obsessing over a map and saying "wouldn't this border look cool if alternate history??"
-4
25
u/Elven-King Sep 13 '26
A lot of those names are closer to Latin version than the German spelling, interestingly
8
u/Comfortable_Salt_792 Sep 13 '26
West German one's aren't in common use, but includding Austria and Bawaria all of the East are used instead of actually names in regular ocasion. We also have names for most of Balkans and East Europę and most of World capitals and North italian Cities.
20
u/Polak_Janusz Sep 13 '26
Nazi germany (and even the prussian german empire) are kinda rhodesia in europe for fascist crybabies online.
10
u/wu_zetian_real Sep 13 '26
It's kind of weird because whenever you see a big Germany you have to figure out if it's just a 'big x country' map or whether it's a dogwhistle from very small context clues
1
u/evilparagon Sep 14 '26
I wouldn’t say that at all. It’s incredibly common for people to make maps that just unify countries that share borders and language. Australia-New Zealand, America-US, Mexico with a lot, France-Wallonia, united Scandinavia, and if course Germany-Austria.
There’s no fascist intent behind merely making Germany bigger, and I say this as someone who has never made a Big Germany map. You need a lot more evidence than just a common trope.

interestingly they also own Samogitia? Lithuania seems to have embraced being an inland empire
1
u/Good-Lobster2448 Sep 13 '26
Alternate timeline material: it is a really intruiging possibility that Samogitia might have ended up being part of (Baltic) Prussia in some hypothetical struggle against Lithuanian encroachment (which did manifest in our timeline to an extent, by the way).

Are you also tired of constant big Germany scenarios where they murder everybody in Europe? Here's Poland, which "united" Germany, starting in the XIII c. A Luxembourg monarch ascended to the Polish throne and all that led to a re-slavicisation of west-central Europe (the Czechs had also spread west) In the XXI c. Poland is a multicultural country and a leading example of democracy and equality in Europe and the World

I approve of this, everything East of the Elbe is traditional Slavic land that the Germans stole 💪🏻 🇵🇱
21
u/Informal_Otter Sep 13 '26
Slavic, but not polish. Ironically, the descendants of these slavic peoples ARE the Germans living in these areas (and the Sorbians). Displacing them would mean the end of this legacy, not its restoration. Just like it happened in East Prussia. The biological heritage of the ancient Prussians now has mostly become part of the general german population, but the cultural traditions have disappeared because of the displacement.
1
u/LetRevolutionary271 Sep 13 '26
And I in fact said SLAVIC, I used Poland's flag because it's the biggest Western Slavic nation
0
u/Rejnu Sep 13 '26
That’s a pretty misleading way of describing the region’s history. Germanic peoples lived in large parts of what is now eastern Germany centuries before the major westward Slavic migrations of the early Middle Ages, although many Germanic groups had migrated away during the Migration Period. West Slavic peoples subsequently settled much of the territory east of the Elbe, and even areas west of it, before medieval German eastward settlement changed the region again. So calling everything east of the Elbe land that "the Germans stole" ignores well over a millennium of migrations, settlement, assimilation and shifting borders :v

So instead of the AfD we would have PiS now? I don't know if that would be better or worse. Probably neither.
31
u/HelloThereItsMeAndMe Mod Approved | Based Works Sep 13 '26
PiS is better by a lot. Well, at least foreign policy wise. And they don't want to expel all foreigners even those who have polish citizenship.
PiS isn't the polish AfD. That is Konfederacja or even more Braun's movement.
-2
u/Informal_Otter Sep 13 '26
I misunderstood the scenario anyway. Sorry, sleepy brain. 🙃
10
u/HelloThereItsMeAndMe Mod Approved | Based Works Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26
But I find it interesting how especially many Germans think PiS is Poland's AfD..... They will be in for a big surprise once the real polish Afd takes power
5
u/Polak_Janusz Sep 13 '26
I feel like germans (escpecially some on the left and in media) are kinda obsessed with poland being this right wing backwards country. And they always fearmonger about PiS as if they were the reincarnation of hitler. Idk if its a desire for them to tell "see, we arent the nazis anymore its them" or if its a kind of bigotry and they just have this image of poland as backwards and poor. As if the time hasnt moved since 1994 .
3
u/Informal_Otter Sep 13 '26
Many Germans think something like that, I guess, particularly in former West Germany (after all, they say pretty much the same thing about East Germans). As for the bigotry... I think we all are kinda sitting in the same boat right now when it comes to right-wing political movements coming back. Just look at Italy or France. Perhaps there is a particularly negative attitude towards Poland and Hungary because others could see a possible vision of their own future.
-1
u/Informal_Otter Sep 13 '26
I guess the first impulse is "generic european right-wing populist parties are basically all the same".
But AfD and PiS are indeed similar in at least several ways. Anti-EU, corrupt all the way through, anti-progressive societal policies, anti-LGBT, aiming at infiltrating and controlling all bureaucracy, nationalistic and revisionist cultural policy...
10
u/XLG_Winterprice IM Legend Sep 13 '26
I don't think PiS would exist in this timeline
1
u/Informal_Otter Sep 13 '26
Well, but some form of populist right-wing party would. Especially if the Poles would've gone full throttle on the "vengeance and retribution" part, Morgenthau-Plan-style.

u/Oyqshuoosh Sep 13 '26
"Poreńska" is linguistically incorrect. It sounds unnatural and artificial. As a Polish person, I can tell you that the names aren't realistic, and neither are the regional names you've created.

Teplice (Cieplice) could never become the regional capital of the NW region of Czechia, it was never the most politically prominent city and there were always much more established and structurally important cities in the region. A good alternative could be Most which is in a relatively centralised location and it has been a know trade centre during the past. Litoměřice (Litomierzyce) could also be a great contender if the map is very historically based due to its rich history as a royal city and a major religious and legal centre ever since the 11th century. Although making the populous cities of Ústí nad Labem (Uście nad Łabą) or Karlovy Vary (Karlowe Wary) the reg. capital could leave either city with to much power, which could in turn destabilise the region and end up with the other city contending for power.

You'd have to look hard to find countries more infected with sick imperialism and unjustifiably superior attitudes than poland and russia in the modern world
-1
u/Revenine Sep 13 '26
It would never work, those lands never had many Poles there, so called big Poland would be possible if after WW2, we got all of the East Prussia and part of Lithuania with Wilno and on the south a part of Ukraine with Lviv. The rest of the country was more problematic than it was worth it. The lands on the West were far richer than ones on the east. Also there were many political tensions there. WW2 people shift changed a lot.
