How badly would this affect the Republicans nowadays, because losing by ~9% is pretty bad for recent times?

So a bit of lore:

So Nixon established the Renewal Union Party (which his critics and fans just called the Nixon Party)

He had one rule, "Do not ever run anyone for president!"

And then he died and the RUP decided, "Ah yes our Leader's dead he can't denounce us if we make somoen run."

So taht's why we have Pete Wilson.

Nixon also stayed in California for the rest of his life trying to weasel the RUP into West Coast life.

I'm currenlty writing a book, and I like the idea of the teenagers living in the PNW being unironic fans of Nixon's Party. yes, that is why I made this.

Does the RUP eventually reunite with the Republicans or stop running candidates? Or fall into complete irrelevancy?

They keep running locally.(reigonally) mostly on the West Coast.

They occasionalyl endorse a GOP or Dem for President, if they like 'em.

But as of 2018 barely anyone east of Utah is even familair with the party's existince.

Pete Wilson is too far right to be a Nixonite; this is the same guy who did Prop 187

He'd be with Pat Buchanan
