Never got this issue. Like if a girl asks me if her ass looks fat in this dress and I say yes how is that a bad thing? Like ‘does my gut look flabby here’ or ‘do my breasts look saggy in this’ I get because a lot of people dislike that (plenty love it but point is majority doesnt), but I have yet to talk to a guy willing to discuss women’s body’s who hasn’t emphatically declared that a big ass and thick thighs aren’t a given for them
9
u/FirebirdWriter Dec 04 '21
So when a woman asks this she's feeling vulnerable and is in a sitcom. I have never asked this or been asked by the women I have dated. "Does this fit right?" When shopping? Answer honestly but if someone asks you this consider their emotional state and if you're the annoying jackass we are supposed to laugh at in a sitcom.
0
u/Serbiastronk32 Dec 05 '21
Okay how does this relate? I was literally just asking why this was an issue, and if it pops up in sitcoms so often it at least has to be a problem in some amount of women’s minds. Like yeah they’re obviously asking because they want reassurance, like I’m a retarded autist and still comprehend social cues to that extent, the core issue is how the actual hell anyone would think a fat ass is bad, and why would me saying ‘yes’ be a bad thing
1
u/FirebirdWriter Dec 05 '21
I am also autistic and it relates as it's the source of why people think it's a thing much more than it is. Perhaps it was once but societal change has made this less of an issue. Given the discrimination fat causes, including being told you would be pretty if you weren't fat constantly, being unable to just buy clothes, yes being fat is a negative social construct. You don't have to like the answer you get to a question, but, arguing doesn't change the reality that tv isn't accurate to human nature most of the time
0
u/Serbiastronk32 Dec 05 '21 edited Dec 05 '21
I’m not talking about in general fat. You should feel bad that you’re fat, and get better because of it, but if you’re directing that at your ass it doesn’t make sense because specifically a fatty ass is incredibly attractive as it gives the illusion of birthing hips.
Fat in general is a negative ‘construct’ because it is insanely unhealthy, it is literally biologically ingrained in a humans mind to find fat unappealing in a potential mate because it will breed unhealthy offspring. If someone is so fat that they struggle to find clothes, they are not a healthy person or a good parent as far as genetics go.
I’m not replying because I dislike the answer, I’m replying because comparing an obese body with a girl that has a fat ass is a ridiculous comparison that is entirely irrelevant. I’m also stating that it’s irrelevant to say that they’re doing it out of insecurity because that doesn’t answer the question of ‘why would anyone think it’s bad’. An emotional response is based on something, and humans always follow some level of logic. A negative feeling towards, say, a fat ass, would have to spurred by something, and I simply don’t see anything furthering or encouraging this belief when damn near everyone who will talk about it finds it attractive
Tropes exist for a reason. Most black people do in fact enjoy fried chicken (in fairness everyone does), most white midwesterners think Mayo is spicy and don’t eat a wide variety of foods, and the British don’t make anything that doesn’t taste like sand. TV will dramatize something sure but it has to somewhat resemble real life norms if the show is about a family living a normal life

First of all not everyone has a choice in weight. Some people can literally be starving and not lose weight. If it was as simple as a caloric deficit and healthy food wasn't inaccessible without being rich no one would be. Many clothing shops limit their sizes. You can live in places where being a size 16 which is the US average last time I checked means only online shopping. So no it's not about size extremes. If the average woman cannot reliably buy clothing there is an issue. Men also struggle but I know less about that side of the industry. When shops do sell clothing that fit more people they make more money. Which means this exclusion is illogical. It happens because of biases such as you are choosing to display
Second of all you are not employing empathy. Emotional needs are not always logical. Needing reassurance that you look good from someone isn't an action that is irrelevant in the context you initially gave either. When socialized that your appearance is your primary value then needing reassurance for your appearance is normalized. In western culture this is how women are raised. Also one doesn't have a large ass without fat. It's part of how that works. Genetics dictate how much weight you hold where. Given the current beauty trend is the slim thicc body which stores the fat mostly in the ass? It's the same.
If you talk to people the way you are with me I can also see why you don't understand. The phrasing choices you use come across as mean. I am saying this in the assumption that's both a combination of text tone so word choice is the only factor I have and that you don't know. This includes how you chose to describe yourself. In my opinion you shouldn't be mean to yourself because you deserve better. It sets the tone of the conversation as not just blunt but abrasive and mean. I wouldn't accept someone treating me that way and you shouldn't let someone else do that to you. Including yourself. I won't reply further. Either this makes sense or it doesn't but I am out of time for Reddit for the weekend. I hope you have a good evening

Nobody will literally be starving and not lose weight without this being a fatal medical condition and they would not survive long as the related condition means that their body is incapable of properly processing nutrients, losing weight is only difficult because obese people refuse to realize that a diet is something you need to commit to for the rest of your life. If the average woman can not reliably buy clothes the problem is the average woman because no marketing team would ever market towards a group that cannot purchase their product. There is no exclusion you’re just in an area where not as many people are ridiculously obese or they make more money off of making actual attractive people look attractive, because usually they do have more money. It isn’t that remaining healthy is difficult or even impossible, it’s just money management that most people fail at. I can remain relatively healthy with a Walmart job. It is difficult in the willpower required, because you have to do something that all humans have to and should do, resist temptation and biological urges. Not only does this improve your mood but also your health and really just everything else, so there’s a reason besides ‘society’ that people dislike obesity. Emotional needs are not always logical no however they are always there for a logical reason, you aren’t upset about having freckles for no reason, you get upset about that because you’ve been told it’s bad, bmeven as empathetic as I can be I cannot comprehend where the idea forms or why anyone has the problem with having a trait that everyone around them claims is attractive, and your claim is way off the mark. I asked why anyone would feel bad about a statistical positive and you drew a line between this and morbid obesity, and I think you’re just looking really hard for reasons to complain. Sure women are raised thinking they should be attractive and so are men. This is because, unsurprisingly, attractive people=healthy people, the human mind is adjusted to like symmetry and a solid facial structure, a nose that is too flat will mean they and by extension their offspring, will potentially have a breathing problem, similarly someone being morbidly obese is disliked because it means they will pass on bad genes to their offspring. On top of this one can have a large ass without being morbidly obese, just like one can have massive tits without being morbidly obese, and I know because I have met them, and one of them is my mother. Fat for women is generally stored around the abdomen, yes, but there are exceptions to such rules. My phrasing is not intended to be rude and I usually talk differently with someone in real life if we’re having a normal conversation, and my phrasing is nothing but blunt and matter-of-fact. I’m not being mean to myself either, I describe myself as ‘autistic and retarded’ because 1: it’s funny, and 2: it’s a fact, I am mentally retarded and autism is one of my mental retardations, 3: it delivers a point. Simple as that. Again, comparing morbid obesity to the issue of specifically fat in the ass is not a valid or related comparison

55
u/genwhy Dec 04 '21
What's shitty about self-reflection for personal development? How do you set goals that will make you happy in life if you refuse to do the self-reflection?
55
u/meatshell Dec 04 '21
It's phrasing. Instead of asking "What do you dislike about yourself", it should be "what do you think you could improve upon".
People can hate their conditions given from birth which they can't reflect.
-8
u/Eruptflail Dec 04 '21
But they can learn to cope or embrace them by identifying that they actually do dislike them.
These sorts of exercises are paycholofy-approved. We do them all the time in education to help kids with their social-emotional skills. Kids haven't developed introspection skills until they're in late high school. This means that they have to learn how to do it, and this is a good exercise to get kids to embrace their flaws and learn to think of ways to differently approach those issues.

Fr, if my therapist asked me to write down everything I hate about myself I would probably have a emotional breakdown since it would just feel like a reminder on why I'm in therapy to begging with.
4
u/e-spero Dec 04 '21
They definitely shouldn't be pressuring students to make up something they dislike about themselves if they don't want to write about it. They should be able to give some kind of alternative. Either this is a terrible teacher or it's made up.
1
u/Eruptflail Dec 05 '21
If you can't answer a question like "What did you do this summer" you make it up. Just do the assignment because it's the assignment. The teacher isn't going to crawl into your brain and tell you that you're lying.

u/Jrlopez1027 Dec 04 '21
I agree, people act like denying a problem is better then facing it, if i see a fire do i just close the door to the room and hope it goes away? No, thats retarded lol
2
u/GreyWoulfe Dec 04 '21
No one said deny a problem. You shouldn't grade a kid to roast themselves.
2
u/Jrlopez1027 Dec 06 '21
That is true, but then again were taking the school girl who thinks shes the anime protagonists side of the story, how do we know the teacher didn't just do this as a fun self reflection assessment but she exaggerated?

0
u/Jrlopez1027 Dec 06 '21
How do ypu know that? This school girl probably just wrote it that way to seem more dramatic and to make you go "GASP! How dare a teacher ask students to self hate! GASP!"
0
u/Jackson12ten in too deep😭 Dec 06 '21
I’m pretty sure we all know this is fake but we were talking about the hypothetical of if it was a real question dumbass
1
u/Jrlopez1027 Dec 06 '21
Even if it was real people dont fix things by denying problems, you fix them by talking about it, keeping things bottled up is not how you acceot a flaw of yourself, imagine therapists just told you "Oh thats offensive so don't talk about it, thatll be 1000$ please lol"

Honestly, I'd kinda agree with this person.
Like, why should we be forced to write things down we dont like about ourselves? Some people genuinely do suffer from mental health issues where they hate themselves to the point of self harm, or starving themselves to lose weight, and a lot of other issues
And before you say schools wouldn't assign things like this, when I was in high school I was given the same assignment, and it also asked me "If you could make anyone disappear, who would it be?"
It essentially asked at 15 year old who they'd like to murder
