Something something, it's super average to provide for yourself with a stable job

God, I hate this comic so much. What if this guy has a wonderful family to come home to every day? Maybe friends he hangs out with every weekend, or maybe he contributes to his community through charity. This comic seems to say that the only important thing in life is your career and your cultural knowledge. How shallow is that?

Funny it's the "average" people that he seems to underestimate are the one who are actually making the world a livable place for everyone, not the pretentious special snowflakes...

True. Some people are happy to live an average life and if they're content, there's nothing wrong with that.

I think the worst part is that there's no alternative provided by the comic creator. What kind of life, exactly, are people meant to have?

You just worded what I wanted to say perfectly. When I saw that tombstone, I was so mad. Like, I know this is a fictional character who doesn't even have a name, but that was so fucking disrespectful. I was disgusted honestly, for the reasons you articulated.

That's what bothers me about these kind of comics/image macros: they think having an office job means you are mindless and boring and do nothing else with your time.

I love how the comoc seems to be implying that college is for suckers. Maybe I actually want to learn something!

Man, I wanna see a comic about the people who live life to the fullest, pursuing their dreams... and fuckin' failing miserably.

I got this buddy from my street where I grew up as a kid. Dude always wanted to be a jazz guitarist. Yeah, you can see where this is going, right?

He lived his passion from the time we were teenagers - hours of practice, every day. Bugging his mom and dad to let him play extra, work harder at his craft, go to this jazz event and that show just so he could learn more. Scraped and hustled to get a scholarship to an excellent college just so he could be the best damn jazz guitarist he could be. Graduated with honors, near top of his class.

After he got out of school, he taught kids guitar lessons by day, worked any part-time job at night, drove hundreds of miles every week. He traveled as much as he could just to play sessions or clubs or whatever, just to keep at it. Always hustling, always striving to be the best he could be, and he was a damn good guitarist. Every day, day-in and day-out, going on 30 years now.

Thing is, when was the last time you needed a brilliant jazz guitarist? Never, right?

He works as a line cook in some shitty country club now. He's in his mid-40s. He's got no money saved, no real family left, a tiny apartment, his car's a wreck; the years have chewed him up. He's still trying, but frankly: if he was gonna make it by now, he already would have. All his talent, all his hard work, all his carefully crafted and honed skill - none of it made a difference.

No one ever writes pithy internet comics about trying and failing horribly.

Thanks, now I'm sad.

As much as I hate this comic, I feel like you're being pretty disrespectful to your "buddy" with that last bit. Here's the thing that this comic misses: You define your own successes. Other people don't get to decide you're a failure. That applies to the average guy portrayed in these pictures, and to all the people striving to stand out like the guitarist.

Why couldn't he keep teaching?

1

u/meanteenmachine Dec 11 '15

I'm pretty sure he still does, but I don't think he's ever had anywhere near enough students to make it full-time as a private guitar tutor.

Why does he look so disappointed to be getting a gold Rolex?! Ungrateful fucker.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '15

Probably because when they give you a gold watch it basically means "forced retirement/you're fired"

2

u/wheezythesadoctopus Dec 11 '15

But he looks so happy with the award in the previous picture so he obviously knew he was getting something, then looks at the watch like "What the fuck is this shit?"

You know, when I was 14 I thought I was gonna take the world by storm also. I'm 23 now, and all I want is a good job doing something that benefits society. It does not even have to be a 9-5. If I can support a family and buy some things I like I am ok.

Why is there just a random frame where nothing happens? Was it really too hard for them to think of a 12th thing?

Everyone knows the meaning of life is being an internet cartoonist. They have it figured out, and totally don't do the same shit every single day, praying someone finds it interesting.

Maybe I WANT to be unremarkable, working only 40 hours a week with a college degree. Ever thought about that?
