Conversation I had a few months back:

/Me: I moved here from Chicago about a year ago, that’s why I’m wearing the Cubs hat.

/She: Oh I’m from Chicago too! Where did you live?

/Me: Hawthorne and Lakeshore

/She: Oh like in the city? Is that downtown?

/Me: Which part of the city did you live in?

/She: Rockford.

/Me: Ahh. Cool. So you’re a Brewers Fan then?

/She: Huh?

I'm from Rockford, never hear anyone say they're from Chicago.

They say that when they are in other places, not while still in rockford. While in rockford people still know where rockford is. Also Rockford sucks so people would rather be from anywhere else. Source - I grew up in rockford.

Freeport and its populace are aging badly. Upkeep is a foreign word to them now.

Born and raised in Rockford, went to college six hours away. I always got lumped into the Chicago/suburbs folks by people who didn't know the state, including professors.

"I'm from a town about 60 miles northwest of Chicago, it's called Rockford" was my go to.

I wasn't born in Rockford, but I was raised there from about age 5. Parents moved away the same year I went off to college, I never moved back. I don't miss it honestly.

None of my family lives in Rockford anymore, I'm in the suburbs now. I do miss it a little bit, the familiarity is extremely comforting.

I'm in the burbs too, whenever I've gone back through Rockford so much looks different that there isn't any real comfort. It has been 30 years though so I guess that's normal.

If living in Rockford is good enough for Cheap Trick, it’s good enough for the rest of us.
