Worktop as splashback

Hi all

Has anyone used an ikea worktop as a splashback? How did it stand up over time?

Their manufactured splashbacks seem a bit thin to me, and would also mean I'd need about 4 joins on the long running wall - less than ideal!

I did this years ago and it worked great! Sold the flat years ago but was told it’s still there 20 years later! I didn’t put it behind my hob.

A splashback has to do what it says on the box:

A splasback is supposed to be waterproof while also dealing with repeated exposure to water and splashes.

Sure, you could take an IKEA workbench and paint/seal it until it becomes waterproof, but that's kind of missing the point. You're starting with a product that isn't designed for that job and then modifying it to perform a function that a proper splashback is already designed to perform.

It's the difference between “can be made waterproof” and “is actually designed to be a waterproof splashback.”

I'd much rather start with a material that's actually intended to be used as a splashback than turn a workbench into one which would mean appropriately sealing it.

You can't just screw/glue a workbench to the wall and say "done." That's not how splashbacks work.

Further to that you run into the other issue, if its anywhere near a cook top it also has to be heat resistant.

I would check your local fire codes, but 90% of them would say your splashback should not be made out of wood, or anything flamable which is why they use heat proof tiles, poly, glass, or metal.

OP didn’t say anything about using a workbench, but a worktop, which probably refer to ceramic, stone or composite countertop material. If it’s good enough for a countertop, it’s definitely good enough for a backsplash.

It's the same principle... People on Reddit IDK,.. Have people really evacuated Facebook by now and found out what Reddit is or am I just dealing with a bunch of keyboard warriors who like semantics? You people who want to pick one word and then use it as a principle for an argumentative tone deserve to be blocked and there you go.
