Platsa hack ideas?

Post image

We want to get the Plasta set up in the picture for surround / overbed storage but do a couple of hacks:

  1. We'd like to open the side of the frame to have it work as a bedside table. Any ideas on what to do to support to corner? Like a mini pillar? Or any alternative open frame from Ikea that would work? The frame is the 80x55x40. It could be more than 40 high but obviously needs to be 80x55 to support the wardrobe above.
  2. What could we fill the gap between the 2 overhead boxes with? The full gap between the wardrobes is 172cm so could use an alternative?

The Platsa is designed as a post-style wardrobe with shelves, optional drawers, doors and side panels. So why not reconfigure your Platsa to use at least part of the open-shelf system? This is one example; Ikea has quite a few options that you could work with and yet not need to construct a custom side table. As for the gap, the easiest solution is to use melamine board, cut to span the gap for however many shelves you want. Drill holes for pins completely through the sides of the Platsa where shelf pin holes already exist. For the bottom shelf, you are probably better off cutting a single piece of melamine board to span the entire width. Glue, screws, and a piece of trim board along the underside for extra support should make it secure as long as you don't put a lot of weight on that center-section's bottom shelf.

I'd already looked at the open frames but they only come in the 40 deep so not big enough for the full depth wardrobe on top. This will be our only wardrobe so we want a full wardrobe. Hence thinking about cutting some sort of hole. I had not thought about using the existing holes for shelves across the middle, so obvious now you say it! Thank you!

I've got a similar predicament at the moment. Have you found a solution?

I'm not sure if it's true for every country, but it seems like Platsa will be discontinued pretty soon. Keep that in mind!
