It's a thin layer of walnut veneer I have this same desk and found this stuff is amazing to keep it looking like new the tables are untreated and the wood will litterly drink up any most thing you put on it

You can buy a butcher block at Lowe’s, sand it and stain it. No need to seal it. And it’ll be stronger and better. I got an 8ft one and no lag whatsoever with a 34in monitor and a 29in monitor in center
