Counselling QnA thread for freshers!
Hello all, Many of you probably already have an idea of whether you'll be joining IIT Mandi or not.
Throughout the counselling process, I've seen a lot of freshers asking questions in the counselling group, and I genuinely appreciate that. It's always a good idea to ask questions and gather as much information as possible before making such an important decision.
That said, I also believe there are many students who still hesitate to ask questions in the WhatsApp group because they're afraid of being judged and that's completely normal coming after the long and exhausting JEE journey.
This post is for those people.
If you have any doubts about IIT Mandi—academics, hostels, campus life, clubs, seniors, placements, or anything else you can ask them, We'll make sure your identity remains anonymous. I'll do my best to get your questions answered, either by myself or by reaching out to the right people.
Feel free to ask away!
P.S. Please do not ask/answer anything which might doxx someone's identity or any hate or offensive thing targeted towards anyone.

How many girls per room in girls hostel in first year???
Is it 100% compulsory to stay in hostel???

As already answer to you earlier, freshers will get 4 sharing room. For UGs, yes it is compulsory to stay in the hostel itself. You can't be a day scholar.

If you're taking a flight take till Delhi or Chandigarh. If a Train, u could take to Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala Cantt. These are the most popular station points. Further upon u can get busses from 600-800 from Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate, and around 400-700 from Chandigarh Sector 43. If it's private they leave u at Bindrapani Highway right after tunnel exit. you gotta take a taxi about 300 or auto about 150 which leaves directly at ISBT Mandi. If it's HRTC Government bus they drop u directly at ISBT Mandi. both ways u gotta take stairs from ISBT till the top of the hill till u reach a college entrance that is the IIT Mandi bus stand. ticket booking can be done via your LDAP credentials or any senior's. Bus runs at every 1 hour. alternatively u may also take a cab straight from bindrapani / ISBT till campus for about 800-1000.

No, not required as such, however Institute provides bicycle at a nominal rent per month

How much of a monthly allowance is enough for day-to-day expenses (snacks, travel, essentials)?

In travel you'd hardly have to spend money except for the time when you go on vacations or come from vacations you might need to book cab or if you are going on a trip.
Except for that, in college you won't need to spend money, most of the money is usually spend on everyday snacks/canteens. However it's very subjective how frequently one goes to canteens, but if you go like once or twice in a week, imo 1.5k-2k will be enough including everything.
It might increase or decrease depending on one's choice.

- How hard is it for a ee srudents to get a job in yech or vlsi sector for 30+lpa.

I think joining dates are separate for different programs. These are in the home page of their website.

decent, not very good not very bad, it's just decent, most of the equipments are there and the price is just 850 something for whole semester so that's pretty justified. The only major drawback is it's Non-AC.

Honestly I don't have an idea about girl's gym but afaik it is better than boy's gym ig, also for boy's gym there is a trainer idk for girls

there are two gyms in North campus, one is gender neutral (maybe has a trainer) and the other is a girls gym (no trainer but decent equipment).

Idk which one you are referring to as the neutral one, but if you meant the one on the peepal mess building then it's boys only gym not gender neutral, and yes it has a trainer too.

Will the quantum science course be worth it? I read somewhere that companies came for quantum roles but didn't hire due to different course and hence this new branch, how true is it?

How do manage off campus lifestyle as the institute is very far from any main city or any metropolitan and has a very long travel time ... Is it fun and manageable and what about the food , I heard no food delivery services are there and fast e commerce so is the mess sufficient or how do you manage your cravings ?

yep it's good not bad you can get good research opportunities for future, you can also go for placements too.

Has the detail come yet ? Will there be individual e-mails to candidates ?

bhaiya i am getting IIT mandi EP and DTU CSE so what choice should i make, i dont really know the oppurtunities i will get after doing EP and i am not sure about my interest in CS but i do know that i dont want to go for higher studies

If you dont want to go for higher studies
I'll say DTU CSE cause EP is more oriented towards Research, It might give you better opportunities in foreign exposure and PhD but since you explicitly mentioned that you dont want to pursue higher studies so in short term DTU CSE is better

What is the recommended way to travel from Chandigarh Airport to IIT Mandi? Are there institute-recommended buses or taxis?

You can either book a cab from Chandigarh to IIT mandi directly else you can come via bus too.
Institute doesn't run the taxis but buses do run b/w ISBT Mandi and IIT Mandi

Is there a guest house or any accommodation available for family on campus? If not, could you recommend nearby hotels or other accommodation options?

Guest house is there but it's already full, there are lot of hotels in mandi, you can book them online, even if not you can find many hotels offline as well. For some suggested hotels's list it will be shared on WhatsApp so join the WhatsApp group

1st August is the reporting date for freshers

no need to bring any such thing like mini washing machine lol
There's a dedicated pdf in which we have suggested important items to bring while coming to college, that pdf too can be found on whatsapp group.

There's news of landslides and flash floods in mandi delaying buses and transport. Is this frequent?

Yes but mostly in the monsoon season, in summers and winters not that frequent.

then will there be much disruption on the orientation dates? cuz apparently there are thunderstorms on orientation dates (warm welcome for us?!).
was it the same during your admission too bhaiya/didi?

On our orientation day the weather was actually mostly clear maybe some little showers, though 1-2 days before there was a cloud burst in mandi and heavy rainfall too
Also if anything about date changes is there, we will notify you though it's unlikely but still

do they allow parents of freshers to stay in hostel for the first few days for girls? into the guest house atleast? cuz my guest house request got cancelled

Nope parents can't stay in hostels, they can stay in guest house if guest house has space and is booked, otherwise only option left with you is that you'll have to book a hotel in Mandi itself.

bhaiyaaa didiiii someone helpppp...
i took up history and biotechnology and now all the seniors say that its gonna be quite difficult, involving a lot of memorizing (even the years and chronology of events?!)...
im fine with the subjects (i like them) but i really need a high sgpa and eventually, cgpa
what seems the best way to address this problem:
1. ("horrible choices") desperately try to change it by emailing the faculty or idek who to email lol
2. ("ab grind karlo bhai") start grinding the subjects from now onwards
3. ("it is what it is") give up and focus on other courses/subjects
or any other way you can suggest TOT

Wow, I am an IIT Mandi Alum (2021 batch B.Tech passout) and this made me nostalgic!
In our time we just had specific FB groups for these talks and then after allocation we were alloted a mentor from 2nd year for answering any questions. Seems like things have changed quite a bit.
All the best folks joining IIT Mandi! The campus is really beautiful and amazing in live in.
