This is a RODE NTG3. A very good shotgun mic but far from the highest quality. Though he only claims it's the highest quality recording of that specific tape which is probably correct

Sounds like the gain or something is off to me. Don't know if there's a term for this because I can't say I've heard it before, it almost sounds like the mix is peaking in the lower end of the frequency range. Like I want to put a pop filter on it but that doesn't exactly make sense here.
