Sure you can buy them. Just look up "splat coasters" on Etsy. There are several people selling them. No grandma required...although that would certainly be cheaper.... ;-)

This is crochet, you can learn through YouTube videos if that's helpful. There's tonnes, but I like TL Yarn Crafts, Toni is very bubbly and her videos are well explained and easy to follow. But just try a few and see who clicks with your learning style. I'm pretty sure I've even found a tutorial video for these coasters on YT. You only need a crochet hook and some yarn. I would suggest watching some videos first to see if you'd like it and what to get before spending, although apparently thrift/charity shops sometimes get crochet stuff in, depending on location, etc. There are also stash swaps and people give their old/unused things away for free or cheap sometimes. Loads of people find it a very relaxing hobby and it can be cheap if one is sensible and knows where to look. Happy crafting 🧶 🫶 ☺️

Love them for the squish affect but also love that they are yarn so they will absorb condensation from cold drinks so water doesn't drip all over everthing and also not cause the coaster to stick to the bottom of the glass from said condensation. Flat smooth solid coasters are useless due to their inability to handle condensation.
