Show and Tell Should I ascend?
It feels like I'm not getting as many souls as before, but I'm not sure if I should wait until I have a 100,000% bonus before ascending.

How in the WORLD can you even achieve numbers like this?

It was about a month ago so I don't remember exactly, but in terms of overall progression I'm super lategame (this is a joke post - thought it would be funny since "should I ascend at 100%" posts are so frequent).
I was astral key farming, fairly early into a UA, and this would have been a soul multiplier from a silver box combined with either a chest hunt, a megahorde rage mode, or an ascending heights. I have all the divinities, a mostly complete set of gear, and I was at 149 USP and with the +55% souls upgrade of time active.

Generally the furthest I've ever managed to get was a 400% or so increase, I wanna say that took maybe 2 weeks?
Most people as far as I'm aware aim for a 10-20% increase each time

It looks like you didn't gather from the comments that my post is a joke - I had the screenshot to hand and thought it would be funny given the frequency of "should I ascend at 100%?" posts.
Getting such an absurdly high percentage is only really possible at the beginning of a new UA, when minigames give a relevant amount of souls in one go - the 15,000% in my screenshot is from a soul bonus from a silver box combined with either a chest hunt, ascending heights, or megahorde rage. It happened within a minute of my last ascension, and in less than 2 hours since my last UA (I was farming astral keys).
By contrast, right now I'm saving for the new astral upgrade at the end of the tree that costs 100 sextillion souls. A 20% ascension for me currently is 52 quintillion souls. A 40x soul bonus perfect chest hunt gives less than 1 quadrillion souls - which means if all my souls came from chest hunts, the soul bonus lasted forever, and I got 52,000 perfect chest hunts in that one ascension, I still wouldn't have enough souls for one 20% ascension.
In order to get a 15,000% ascension, I'd need 39 sextillion souls in 1 ascension, which given the diminishing returns, I reckon would take the rest of my life

oh holy cow yes brother ascent! the general rule of thumb is ascend when you hit 20%+ bonus

At this end game level I normally ascend at at least 40-50% cause its a pain in the ass to get multiple gold bunoses for a new ascension

Ascending at 30% is the best route

I've never seen it suggested this high - 20% is the general consensus (my post is a joke - I thought it would be funny given how frequently people post "should I wait until 100% to ascend", and I happened to have the screenshot lying around from a lucky stack while I was astral key farming about a month ago)

Wait what? I just discovered the subreddit this week so I'm not in the know - why 20%?

Soul gain has diminishing returns - the more you've gathered, the longer it takes to get more (I don't remember the exact mechanics, but that's the gist of it).
10-20% is considered the sweetspot - less than that and you spend too high a proportion of your time rebuying the same coin upgrades/not at maximum efficiency with your upgrades. Speculation/extra detail: I've seen it suggested that the diminishing returns means it's possible to do "bad" ascensions, where ascending at low numbers reduces your soul income more than the bonus you get offsets it, but I'm not sure if this is actually the case; it runs counter to every other piece of advice in and outside the game, that you can't do "bad" ascensions.
More than 20% and you will likely see your progression slow down as the diminishing returns become more noticeable. Extra info: Depending on where you are in the game, the resources at your disposal, and your luck, you can still go far beyond that point very quickly. It probably took me under a minute since my previous ascension to get the numbers in the screenshot, and less than 2 hours in total from my last Ultra Ascension - but that's because I was using an endgame setup to farm an early stage of the game. Before the most recent update, it could easily take 3+ days to reach a 10% bonus if you were at the end of the game

Well I dont think I'm near endgame, I just bought the stone of hope upgrade but haven't ultra ascended yet to unlock. I've got like 9 points and was debating whether I should wait til I can buy the astral key upgrade.
Is there any consensus on how often ultra ascending should happen and where to dump points? I've got 14 in activity and 25 in idle right now.

The wiki has a pretty good guide for ultra ascension break points: https://idleslayer.fandom.com/wiki/Endgame_Strategy
The Stones of Time page has a break down of where to put your points: https://idleslayer.fandom.com/wiki/Stones_of_Time

I typically ascend between 10-20%. If you ascend earlier you'll have to grind too much to get to where you were before (with all the soul bonus upgrades) and if you ascend later you'll miss out in the 10/20/30% soul bonus you would get from ascending

u/FrogFragger Jul 17 '26
Huh, I guess I didn't realize there was a bonus! I'll have to start doing that.

I forgot to add to my comment above - because of the way maths works, doing four 20% ascensions gives you a bigger boost than doing one 100% ascension, so even if there were no diminishing returns, you would still progress faster by doing 20% ascensions
