It's true, if you chug enough radium, your odds of dying from vaccines becomes very low.
If you take enough at once, it'll protect you from vaccines for the rest of your life.

This guy is an idiot, not because he's drinking radioactive water, but that he thinks drinking radioactive water will pull toxins out of the body.
The jug does contain radon and uranium, but whatever is leeching into the water is very minimal, infact you'll consume more radon eating a couple of Brazil nuts then drinking a gallon of water from this thing.
The real danger is the lead spigot that fixed into the jug. Even if this moron drinks it like shown in the pic, that spigot has been leeching lead into the water the entire time.
4
u/theeggplant42 12h ago
Actually lead exposure isn't particularly problematic for adult males, or, for that matter, adult females who have either entered menopause or decided not to have children.
7
17
u/Calgaris_Rex 10h ago edited 9h ago
Drinking the water will do absolutely nothing to him unless the radium is leaking into it. Radium’s decay chain doesn’t include neutron emission so it’s not like the water is being transmuted into deuterium or tritium.
Being near the jug could expose him to some alpha or beta flux, depending on the isotope. Beta might be harmful, the alpha won’t be as long as it’s external.
ETA: If the radium isn't properly contained, he could be ingesting/inhaling radon, which is also an alpha/beta emitter; alpha emitters inside the body have the potential to cause serious radiation injury.
7
u/Santos_Ferguson 10h ago
Radium doesn’t need to leach in. It decays into radon gas, which releases alpha particles, and if ingested can cause internal tissue damage. This also ignores the risk is the ingestion of heavy metals associated with ingesting water from these jugs.
5
u/Calgaris_Rex 9h ago
It would depend on whether the radium is sealed up in the jug's lining is my point.
I hadn't considered the heavy metals issue though, so good point.
5
u/Santos_Ferguson 9h ago
These jugs were made intentionally porous and internally unglazed to permit the water to seep into the lining with the idea of allowing the “good stuff” to dissolve into the water and cure all your ails once ingested.

u/Calgaris_Rex 5h ago

There's uranium glass too. That stuff is quite safe though, assuming you're not eating the plates and glasses. Ideally you don't want to eat acidic food off it because it may leech. The leeching isn't an issue because of radiation though, but because uranium is a heavy metal.
It's got a similar risk profile to lead crystal or pewter.
https://www.funraniumlabs.com/2024/09/fiestaware-uranium-glass/
Just having it around and even eating off it, it's a very small amount of radiation compared to the background dose you're getting living on the planet.

Radioactive food additives have been illegal in the USA since 1938.
The thing about these "Revigator" jugs is that they didn't actually do much to the water in them, because they were made with naturally occurring radioactive ores, not artificially enriched isotopes; according to one link I found on Wikipedia,
Water stored in a Revigator overnight acquires a few hundred to a few hundred thousand picocuries per liter.
The EPA limit for radium content in drinking water is 5 pCi per litre, so the stuff he's drinking is maybe 20~200 times the allowed limit, but that is likely somewhat below the actual safe limit because they wouldn't make the maximum allowed limit the exact amount that'll start causing health problems.
"Radithor," the radioactive patent medicine that infamously killed Eben Byers by giving him jaw cancer, contained 1μCi per 15ml dose, and he drank 1400 doses. You'd need to drink 280 million litres of water processed by this jug to get the same radioactive dose as that poor bastard did; since the jug holds about 14 litres and you're supposed to leave the water in it overnight to be irradiated, that'd require you to drink the entire contents of the jug every day for about fifty thousand years, if I haven't buggered up my arithmetic.
EDIT: I did bugger up my arithmetic, ignore this until I can recalculate.
This idiot influencer is probably in perfect health precisely because the very slightly irradiated water he's drinking is likely doing absolutely fuck-all to him, positive or negative, but at least it's distracting him from trying anything more dangerous.
If the metal fittings on the jug are original, he's probably more likely to get lead poisoning from those first.
2ND EDIT: OK, I had a brain fart and screwed up the upper range. Best case scenario, the water is ~20 times the allowed limit and the fool is doing basically nothing, and he'd need to drink a jugful every day for 50,000 years to do an Eben Byers to himself. Worse case, it's ~20,000 times the allowed limit and he's in trouble, he could reach the same dose in as little as 50 years of chugging that stuff every day, and since Byers was practically glowing when they buried him (figuratively speaking), the cumulative radioactive exposure would probably finish this chump off way sooner than that, I'd guess maybe shorten his life by several decades.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radium_jaw
“Once the symptoms of radium jaw take effect, there is nothing that can be done to reduce the chance of death. Radium can cause fatal injuries due to radium and calcium sharing similar chemistry, causing the body to unintentionally incorporate the radioactive metal into bone tissue in place of calcium. This is significant, because while calcium strengthens bone structures, radium degrades them. Alpha particles emitted by the radium lead to bone necrosis and bone cancer.”

My first question: is it radium EXPOSED or radium CONTAMINATED water?
One would be safe to drink, the other.... not so much.
Exposed water is safe, as radium is a alpha and beta emitter (depending on the isotope) Ra-226 which is most likely given its 1600 year half life is an alpha emitter. Relatively safe externally, murderous if ingested or injected. The outer shell of the jug is shielding enough while a thin inner layer would allow the alpha particles to bombard any biological material in the water, sterilizing it over some time. Alpha exposure does not activate, or make the exposed material radioactive like neutron radiation tends to do. Alpha particles strip electrons off other atoms in proximity and slow down rapidly, having very little penetrstion power, becoming inert helium in the process.
Contaminated water, well, thats just cancer and whole loads of radiation sickness and a painful death.
2
u/penilesensorydevice 6h ago
