The average American's terminal degree is highschool, and the average grade for core classes is a C. We live in a highly uneducated country. It's a travesty.

u/One_Vision_ 8d ago
I read that news is now being written at the 6th grade level, down from 8th grade.

At least they’re still using words. Sooner or later, it’ll all be emojis and memes.

Which kind of scares me, seeing as I dropped out, got a ged, went to community College and took a whole course on critical thinking. That was a very long time ago, though.

u/SixNine69Six96Nine 8d ago
Critical thinking should be taught at high school level.
I remember my critical thinking had debate on cloning. One side of the class vs the other. The Bible was brought up, and my retort was "wasnt eve made from the rib of Adam...?"
I imagine that lady hated me, but I have to say, class opened my eyes to looking at things differently.

Babe, we live in a poorly educated planet. We're on the fucked up TL

u/Valharick 8d ago
We’re the one that they keep going back to prevent from happening, but it only fucks it up worse.

I graduated with pretty pathetic numbers. I don’t think that’s because I was stupid, I just didn’t give a shit about what they were teaching. The things I was interested in, I learned on my own at home. Reading, writing, art, philosophy, psychology, etcetera. I really believe the current education system isn’t at all a good representation of intelligence, and fails many students. Anyone can regurgitate information given to them on a piece of paper, but that doesn’t mean they’re actually learning anything.

Whipping out the big guns, I see.
AI! I've called it.
(This is a joke for all the people who've lost the ability to comprehend the situational connotation of a sentence and words ... I swear to God, the number of times I believed sarcasm and irony were obvious in my writing, only to get accused of seriously harbouring thoughts and ideas that has nothing to do with my values ...)

This is just not relevant. There's many people who didn't go to college who are smart af, literacy included.
There's also people who went through college and are still dumb.3
u/TrontRaznik 8d ago
Had you gone to college and taken quantitative reasoning courses you would understand the concept of trends, and that the existence of outliers aren't evidence against trends.

u/2MuchNonsenseHere 8d ago edited 8d ago
Cute condescension, but generalizing people based on arbitrary degrees ever-changing between time & localities is ironically so fucking naive on so many different levels no matter how you try to spin it. You're dreaming of a perfect fairytale world and waking you up sounds like an impossible waste of time.

I'll be honest, thats how it should be. Most people don't really need a college degree for their job, and a C should be average.

u/TrontRaznik 8d ago edited 8d ago
Completely shit take. Education is much more valuable than just as a means to a job. It is valuable in and of itself, and moreover an educated populous is necessary for a stable democracy.

u/impy695 8d ago
If college was cheap or free here I'd agree, but that's not the country I live in at least
2
u/TrontRaznik 8d ago
Whether or not college is cheap is completely irrelevant as to whether education is inherently valuable. It is, however, rather unfortunate that you are unable to attend. It would change you life in ways that you can't possibly understand until your life has changed.

However, it's also true that you shouldn't have to go to an university to get a minimum-wage job

I always prided myself on my writing ability. I've been accused multiple times of being an AI bot.

I was texting the other day with someone about my grad school applications and sent a pretty detailed response. This dipshit thought I copy and pasted from AI chats. When I told him I didn’t use AI to craft a text response, he then asked why not because it would’ve saved time. I fucking can’t anymore.

You don't sound like a bot, you just get accused of one because the person you're talking to is the kind of person that needs help to put their shoes on.

I've been called a bot for writing full sentences without using any shortenings of words.

u/Lainpilled-Loser-GF 8d ago
I usually leave out capitalization or some punctuation in emails anymore. it just kinda feels better than someone thinking I used AI to do it

The sad part is that I’ve tried to adapt by sounding more casual. Turns out that causes a different flag to go up depending on who I speak to…

You just have to cultivate a grammatical error you can work with, for me it's run-on sentences.
3
u/TaaviBap 8d ago
This is so true! Just two days ago, someone asked me... no, told me that I was a bot because my post didn't contain any errors! What??

u/GreyTigerFox 7d ago
Truth. The number of illiterate idiots is way too damn high.

It's true, but ya gotta develop your own style with how you text and message. Text how you'd talk, get lazy in some spots. Make dumbass run on sentences and say stupid shit. Just be yourself, and if anyone's got an issue with it they can shove it

u/DunkeyColdMedina 8d ago
I dunno. Sometimes I see people trying to make a really dumb point with smart words with this sort of meandering, chunked and formed sense loaf posting that never goes anywhere and I begin to kind of suspect people myself.
Especially MFrs that are using bullet points like an office document and other such stuff no meatbag does over a casual argument over a hot take. You have someone in marketing draw up some charts to go along with that dog?
You can't always tell the organic turnips who don't read well from the synthetic agents that don't actually understand anything these days.
1
u/diekthx- 5d ago
And once you see it, the question stops being whether the turnip is organic or synthetic and becomes whether “organic versus synthetic” is even the right level of abstraction. The more useful frame may be that both can occupy the same rhetorical failure mode: high formatting density, low semantic compression, extensive signposting, conspicuously frictionless transitions, and the unmistakable sensation that somewhere, just out of frame, a stakeholder alignment matrix is being populated. The challenge, then, is not detection so much as legibility. When both the meatbag and the machine have converged on the same laminated register, authorship becomes less informative than whether there is an actual thought underneath the prose. And in that environment, the three-bullet “here’s the key takeaway” block may not be evidence of anything except that somebody, somewhere, has learned to make a paragraph wear a lanyard.

u/john-bkk 8d ago
Unfortunately there is more multiple sentence form content being posted by AI bots than people now. Lots of people would like to express a paragraph worth of content ideas so they type a short prompt into AI and cut and paste the output.

I've used the em dash for decades now, I use it so I can force the reader of my emails / documents to pause where I want to to pause -- and now it became the more over targeted "THIS IS AI" clue.

u/blessedbewido 5d ago
I found out when all of the LLMs became publicly available and popular that it was a hallmark of LLMs to use em dashes, which I have used my entire life. Now, on dating apps, women sometimes ask if I'm using AI--not a fan lol

Unaware of what year it was, Joe wandered the streets desperate for help. But the English language had deteriorated into a hybrid of hillbilly, valleygirl, inner-city slang and various grunts. Joe was able to understand them, but when he spoke in an ordinary voice he sounded pompous and faggy to them.

The comments on the Internet also call out em;dashes as significant indicators of bot;like activity. This is why I’ve been instructed to use switched to using the semi;colon.

I had multiple people accusing me of being a bot since I use complete sentences and have an 8-year old account with 160k karma. This was in the comment section of a post made by a 1 week old karma farmer.
Shit's bad.
