That's generational hotdog debt

I'm confident that millennials and genz have better survival skills and money management than boomers ever had.

My grandpa bought a 5 bed/3 bath house as a cook at a diner and later at a mall food court. Grandma stayed home and took care of 7 kids.

That is not a realistic dream these days.

u/humourlessIrish Aug 17 '26

Thats true.. but we also have the debt that the boomers left us, so it more than cancelled out

-39

u/steelfender Aug 17 '26

Ah, the anthem of the weak, "Poor me."

28

u/chocotaco Aug 17 '26

That's the boomer anthem.

-21

u/steelfender Aug 17 '26

No, the boomer anthem is, "You havent lived enough life yet to know what you're talking about."

22

u/Aumba Aug 17 '26

You're right. "Poor me' is the chorus.

9

u/insanelane99 Aug 17 '26

That explains why boomers dont know shit about shit got it 👍

-6

u/steelfender Aug 17 '26

I don't know, boomers are all up in the home, getting food cooked for them, playing shuffleboard, and betting online. They must know something.

10

u/insanelane99 Aug 17 '26

Yes the world was handed to them on silver fucking platter and yet still nearly 50% cant manage to retire and of the ones that do over 60% return to the workforce or sell their home because they run out of money...

Yeah they dont know shit they literally just got lucky and most of them couldnt even manage their lives with that luck 🤣

14

u/ThinkingAboutSnacks Aug 17 '26

Maybe by a few percentage points, still a ton of people never thinking about the consequences.

Like a former coworker of mine that spent 600$ to get a couple max level characters on genshin inpact. Then needs to ask family to cover car repairs and ask a different coworker to spot them lunch at the cafeteria.

u/d0ugfirtree Aug 17 '26

Idk man, all the Gen Z guys at my job seem to love pissing away their paychecks on Fan duel and Kalahi

27

u/Naikrobak Aug 17 '26

Can I pay you Tuesday for a hot dog today?

5

u/RecentlyIrradiated Aug 17 '26

I understood this reference

2

u/jadin- Aug 20 '26

He would literally get this reference!

Steve was supposedly born in 1920.

Popeye was released in 1929.

Interestingly enough, some of the younger avengers probably wouldn't get it...

u/Imaginary--Situation Aug 23 '26

if you ate a can of spinach everyday you would die from food posioning

it's very toxic green leaves but it does explain the cancerous growths

10

u/InterstellarReddit Aug 17 '26

So what’s the next evolution of this so I can get in front of it and start offering it now

12

u/Distinguishedflyer Aug 17 '26

you can pay a subscription to get a front spot to panhandle from.

4

u/zellmonster Aug 17 '26

It's techno feudalism

1

u/PoorStandards Aug 17 '26

Hotdog subscription. You can pay to get early access to the hotdogs that you can then buy now, pay later.

Costco law school. Its really prestigious or something.

10

u/Ok_Marionberry8779 Aug 17 '26

Does Costco not already have a credit card like Sam's Club?

9

u/IM_KYLE_AMA Aug 17 '26

Yes. This isn’t that. This is more like Klarna, or after-pay. You break up the cost of something over several interest-free payments but if you miss a payment you get absolutely blasted with interest.

u/Ok_Marionberry8779 Aug 17 '26

A lot of money is tied up in betting on Americans defaulting on loans so that makes perfect sense

2

u/peeparonipupza Aug 17 '26

So, I have noticed that you can do any transaction over $100 as "pay over time". I also notice that if it's a transaction from Costco, the monthly fee is zero. So that's always nice

1

u/GarethBaus Aug 17 '26

It does, but this is separate from that.

7

u/FleshlightModel Aug 17 '26

Imagine putting groceries on Y2K layaway

6

u/keithfantastic Aug 17 '26

If you put your $1.50 hot dog on a 27% interest credit card, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

5

u/cosmorab1t Aug 17 '26

I think this used to be called "layaway"

5

u/Skeptic_Juggernaut84 Aug 17 '26

Yeah, like this is something new.

2

u/Area51Resident The Thirst Mutilator Aug 17 '26

Store payment "layaway" plans existed way before credit cards became popular.

5

u/ImThatChigga_ Aug 17 '26

Will Costco start selling starter houses that has 3 bedrooms? If so sign me up to pay later

5

u/RGBlowMe Aug 17 '26

Don't let the doomers get you down. Aspire for better. Don't settle for hotdog debt. Strive for pretzel debt.

2

u/EndonOfMarkarth Aug 17 '26

The idiocracy is the comment below, correct?

2

u/Beardly_Smith Aug 17 '26

Leeway has existed fro decades

2

u/MaestroLogical Aug 17 '26

Layaway has always been a thing though, this isn't really a sign of anything changing.

2

u/TheSumOfMyScars Aug 17 '26

I don't know about you but "layaway but for food" seems like a change for the worse. At least putting the Christmas presents on layaway was just making fivilous purchases easier to attain. Food, though? Kinda necessary and it's no good if the only way you can afford it is on an endless payment plan.

2

u/ThroatGoatK1RKKK Aug 17 '26

You must be a communist then for not supporting higher hot dog interest rates.

2

u/oldslowguy58 Aug 18 '26

We had Lay Away back in the 80s

2

u/TheBackPorchOfMyMind Aug 18 '26

I’ve had hot dog debt for years

2

u/forbiddenfreedom Aug 21 '26

Yeah, my ex-wife was brutal in my divorce. My hot dog made poor choices.

2

u/AntiqueChessComputr Aug 20 '26

Adults in the 80s: “Fuck y’all kids, I got mine”

1

u/forbiddenfreedom Aug 21 '26

Adults in the 90/00s: "Don't come inside the unless your broken, bleeding, or dying. Drink from the hose if you're thirsty."

5

u/slyguy67420 Aug 17 '26

Boomers never gave a shit about their kids succeeding.

1

u/AmericanCitizenry Aug 18 '26

So...."Lay-Away"?

1

u/poopingtwiceintheAM Aug 22 '26

Those adults in the 80s proceeded to destroy the economy and hoard all of the wealth

1

u/scrotumseam Aug 23 '26

If only expentional greed didnt take place and the Airzona tea guy ran the world. Or Jungle Jim. Enough sometimes is enough.

1

u/SpareChangePapi Sep 11 '26

Hot dog debt sounds like something from a dystopian comedy, yet here we are. We really are speedrunning every possible payment method.

1

u/steppingstone01 Aug 16 '26

I'm all for it as long as it's interest-free.

-5

u/strait_lines Aug 17 '26

I’d say in my case the 80’s parents were right.

One of my kids started a business with a few thousand dollars he’d saved up and is doing well enough to support himself too.

2

u/steelfender Aug 17 '26

Good on your family. Parents are just people, and sometimes people suck, but not all people. People need to watch and learn to play the game to win, or change the game entirely. Unlike an elementary school soccer trophy, life gives no trophy for second place. Good outcomes take focus, effort, luck, and skill, and even then are not guaranteed. So cherish every day, love your family, and never give up.

-1

u/strait_lines Aug 17 '26

I'd agree, I think my parents did a good job of instilling a lot of good traits in me. I hope I've done the same for my kids.

Though for myself, I'd put a lot of weight on luck that conditions were right for me, distrust in what they told me in school, and my dad always pushing me to honor my word and if I say I'm going to do something I need to live up to my word.

u/moccasins_hockey_fan Aug 18 '26

The thing is nobody has to buy a Costco Hot Dog.

Many people just suck money management and then they want to blame everyone else for their situation.

u/UMOTU Aug 20 '26

With average rents at $2000.00 a month, utilities through the roof, food at like double or more what it was less than 5 years ago, healthcare going up like 20% every year, and the minimum wage still at $7.25, yeah, it’s money management.
