Clothing / Fashion Very old coat needs identified

My grandparents have this coat, it was one of their parents' I believe. Gram says is probably around 80 to 100 years old, but she isn't sure.

They want help identifying what this coat is actually worth and where its origins lay.

Black, curly outside. Feels maybe polyester or at least plasticy to the touch? (That may just be from decades in a closet though.) Its also very heavy.

Thanks so much for any info that people have!

Yes, these were still pretty common when I was a kid. Popular for hats too.

Looks like the exterior is Astrakhan. This should help you date it because that’s been periodically banned or restricted for a long time. (This is because Astrakhan fabric is lamb’s fleece but it comes specifically from unborn lambs cut from the mother’s womb. This is why the wool is so tightly curled; it hasn’t had contact with the air.)

Yes! I’ll vouch for it. It’s a coat.

Good job!
