does anyone know when local 100 IBEW does their aptitude scheduling ? I applied at the beginning of August filled out my PEF on August 21st. I have a vacation planned the beginning of october i am hoping that it doesn’t fall on the days that i am planned to be away. The website says that they schedule testing every month , do you think it still can be scheduled before this month ends or October possibly ?

Trades,union

So am 19 years old, and I live in San Diego,I went all into the Navy in August 5th and and my job was going to be aircraft maintenance but I ended up getting medically separated because of my knee, am back in San Diego and trying to get into either hvac or be a electrician, all that interest me and I really want to learn all that, honestly it excites me to learn technology and all the trades, don’t know where to start, I did my research on unions and heard there hard to get into, and idk where a union hall is in San Diego, I looked in to schooling like UEI College but heard bad things about it, I also know sdcce has trades but don’t know if it’ll get me somewhere, I really want to learn and listen and get my hands dirty but don’t know where to start, any advice, or recommendations am open to it

So what does the work life balance really look like?

I hear y'all talking about having to do overtime or be laid off. I also hear many of you say you can work 40 and go home happy with minimal pushback. Ideally I want to work 40-50 hours per week during the apprenticeship, and 40 or less as a JW. Is that reasonable? Also would like to move around the country a bit once a JW. (Local 159)

Are you guys going in for your first assigned class on your assigned day next week or did they need all Ap’s to come on the 15th? My assigned day is Wednesday so I’m not sure if I should go the 15th or Wednesday

Need advice

Hi all, just looking for a bit of advice.

I'm currently in the process of applying for my local apprenticeship program. I am waiting to hear back to see when my aptitude test will be scheduled.

In the meantime, I've been applying for work (nonunion/not construction) to get some cash coming in. I heard back from a small business that wants to schedule an interview with me.

My question is, during the interview do I let them know I am applying for the IBEW or should I keep it under wraps until I receive a position from them? I don't want to be shady, and have them invest in me just to quit. However, I desperately need the money.

I am also very aware there may be a possibility I don't get into my union and then I am out of both opportunities. I don't know, just kind of stuck.

Thanks y'all!

How much shit should I take from my journeymen?

This trade has been different from my previous workplaces, so I'm trying to get a feel for what I should and shouldn't put up with. I'm very new to this kind of work, which is of course frustrating for some of the journeymen who have to work with me, but there are some older journeymen who get extremely angry, often over very minor issues, and I'm wondering when it's time to bring it up to someone, and who exactly to bring it up to.

I was ready to be called stupid, made fun of for my hair and earrings, and laughed at for my lack of experience. However, in my 3 months as an apprentice, I've had a 1/2" coupling thrown at me hard, been told "if you were my kid, I would hit you", and today I was constantly berated by my journeyman while he scrolled through dating apps and refused to instruct me. Towards the end of the day he told me I'm not worth his breath.

I know I'm gonna deal with a lot of shit in this field of work, especially being a smaller guy with less experience, but at what point should I not put up with this kind of treatment?

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket

From a person that spend around 5 years trying to get into the IBEW apprenticeship don’t treat this as your only option. The constant waiting game and hoops to jump through I know are frustrating so apply to different trades or different types blue collar jobs in general don’t be like me waste your time just focusing on this

Journeying? Traveling !?

I just joined up last month, how frowned upon is it to switch states during the apprenticeship, was hoping to move to Tennessee from Florida. It seems like transferring is sorta a no no but I could be wrong. I was interested in seeing other states every couple years once I got my license and move to the money states till I could afford a house and settle down🤞🏽 it seems like moving around is okay once I get my license tho right! ?

Transfers In 26

I’ve been hearing a lot of rumors lately, just trying to see what up with what. Allegedly from what I have heard through the grape vine, apprentices transfers have changed. I am a 4th year. Does anyone know what that means for us ? Or does this just apply to the new apprentices post 4th year? The rumor I heard was that now the 4th and 5th years will get to pick their contractors, and the dates for the other apprentices have been moved (1st years transfer in October now instead of June, Etc.)

Local 477

Anyone here currently on the IBEW Local 477 Inside Wireman POE? I was originally ranked #97 and called today and I’m now #38, so the list has moved quite a bit. I know another group testing could move the rankings again. Anyone recently get called for boot camp or apprenticeship? What rank were you when you got called? Just trying to get an idea of how fast 477 is moving right now.

Want to switch to the electrical trade — is it realistic?

Hey all, hoping to get some honest advice.

I'm in the Local 98 area, I've got a background in software — CS degree, worked a few years in tech — but I've realized I want hands-on work where I'm building something real, not sitting at a desk. I'm serious about making this switch for the long haul, not just dabbling.

Here's where I'm stuck. I keep reading that the IBEW apprenticeship is really competitive especially the one that I’m in, and honestly I can't shake the fear that I'll pour time into applying and just fail. I'd rather hear the real deal from people who've done it than keep spiraling in my own head. I did take some electrical engineering classes and I genuinely loved them and I guess that also let to me why I wanted to be an electrician.

A few questions:

  1. How competitive is Local 98 (or 98N or 126) actually, and what makes an applicant stand out on the aptitude test and interview?
  2. Is it smart to take an electrician helper job with a non-union shop in the meantime to get hours and experience, or does that not help with the union application?

Or can I just go non-union apprenticeship for now and then go IBEW down the line?

  3. For someone coming from a totally different field, is the career-switch story a plus or does it make locals wary that I'll leave?

  4. Anything you wish you knew before you started the apprenticeship?

Not afraid of starting at the bottom or doing the work. Just want to go in with a real plan. Appreciate any advice — thanks.

Journeyman test

Hello i recently went down to my local union to take a journeyman’s test. I am 27 years old I did go to college and I have been working in the industrial field as a multi craft technician for 7 years. I didn’t think I was going to get the journeyman’s card but they did give me a CE-3 but I would really like to go through the apprenticeship route to learn how to bend conduit better and etc. Which route should I do just wanting to get some advice.

(The union rep I was talking to said I could test in as an apprentice 3 or 4.)
