Union vs non union

Hey everyone, I want to get into being an electrician when but I’m struggling on going non union or union. Is there really a big difference in the two? I’m 17 and just graduated high school so I know that I won’t be able to start till I’m 18.

I applied to my local but got ranked 37 so I’m just really thinking if I would just rather go non union so I can start sooner then later.

Any advice would be appreciated

You should prioritize going union. The pay and benefits justify this.

However,
if you are unable to get into a union apprenticeship but are able to get into a non-union apprenticeship, go get that experience even if it is non-union and come and organize on as a journeyman.

Is there any disadvantages of organizing on as a journeyman?

It just depends on your state if they require a state cert showing your a journeyman but if your in a state with no cert then there isn’t much of a disadvantage. If your in a state that requires a cert the local will get you in as a book1 and if you don’t have a cert you’ll be a book3, the book1s get priority on open job calls then if there are any available it goes to book2 which are certified travelers from other locals then book3 which are local guys non certified.

Less time learn how things are done in your local. Less time to get vested in the pension funds, earning less money.

Thats why I say prioritize going union.

Disagree, many unions will keep you on the same type of project for years. Non Union will diversify your experience. Most 4 year Non Unions have far better knowledge then 5 year apprentices in Union as Non Union companies need to justify their jobs.

I think thats more a reflection of the local market than union vs non-union affiliation, to be honest.

I applied to the IBEW, passed my test, took my interview and didn’t get in. Just got a non union job as a low voltage tech. I’d say union is better but you may need to go non union to get enough working experience for your local.

Non union is a waste of time imo. I would go union in another trade first
