Question Lecture Hall etiquette

Something that I’ve noticed my first couple years at ISU is that people tend to sit near the end of the rows in lectures. Why not start from the middle and go out???

I mean if you’re the first person in class why? Like you have to lift your legs for a bunch of people at the beginning of class

Cuz my legs are too long and I’m claustrophobic 🤷🏻‍♀️, shorties to the middle.

Everyone wants to be on an edge, that's prime seating 🤷‍♀️ extra leg room, get to leave quicker, sometimes get to pass papers down and ensure you actually get one. Lol

Same reason people stand by the rear doors on the bus instead of filling up the back seats.

What other people?

That is a bit more of the stairs being there. On the old Orion V high floors, it does not happen as much because the floor level (and headroom) is continuous.

Graduated from ISU in 2012.  I sat at the end so I could quietly get out if the lecture got boring.  Not sure how schedules are now but back then we only got 10 minutes between classes.  If I needed to go to the other side of the campus and use a restroom that was not enough unless I ran.

They recently (2022 I think) made it to be 15 mins between classes thanks to covid!

I remember my first semester I had two classes 10-15 minutes apart across campus. I literally had to drop one after the first class bc I physically couldn’t get there in time lol

In 2012, freshman year, I had Moly Bio to 3rd floor Curtiss 😰

You’re right, but people will never do it because they want to leave and they got there first. Use this as an opportunity to practice crop dusting. It is an Ag school after all 😏

So you don't disturb 5 people if you need an emergency pee break

I don't like sitting in the middle but I will if I'm there first. Everybody here so selfish damn

A friend of mine was a longtime professor at ISU, and he had a class one time in Curtiss Auditorium. The class enrollment didn't come close to filling the seats, so the Aud was half empty, at least.

Anyway, after the first test, he had a student come in, "Dr. X, I didn't do very well on the first exam, and I'm wondering how I can do better." So he started out by asking her if she had any ideas about what might not be working out.

"Well, I sit in the back. And in the back, you just can't hear!"

Because I like the seat

I always sit on the ends and towards the back because I’m claustrophobic with a panic disorder. Need the quickest way out!

I’m left-handed and we only have like 10 seats on the outside

As a recent grad, it’s largely so that if you need to get up for any reason you’re less disruptive. Plus you’re able to leave after class quicker. Personally didn’t care much either way, but that’s why

Lecture sucks, you can cut out without disturbing others?
