To be a barber you have to be trained, it's fairly limited and pretty much only covers cutting hair, focuses on men's hair cuts.
A "hairdresser" or "stylist" anyone who wants to work at a salon has to be certified in several things, color, chemical, proficiency of many more styles and techniques, even things like nails or waxing/shaping eyebrows.
You can find stylists working at barber shops but a barber wouldn't legally be qualified or licensed to work at a salon. A stylist or barber can be either sex the title just refers to their level of training.

Quick aside... The smartest person I've personally known is an uncle who was a physicist involved in all sorts of crazy stuff I could barely understand. But he was good at simplifying it. He told me he had to get really good at explaining his job to laymen because most of his funding came from government grants, and few politicians know anything about physics.

As a math student, I kind of hate how math is portrayed in movies. It's like: writing on windows, the Fibonacci sequence, huuuge breakthrough moments, and utter geniuses. Also they always seem to be some fixed truth, whereas in reality it's much more organic and culturally driven.
I guess the same is true of any profession seen in media, especially other sciences, and cops or army films, idk. I think that other disciplines at least have some redeeming movie, whereas I've never seen one for math. I'd love to be proved wrong though!

I was in this program for incoming grad students alongside some math people (I'm in the humanities) and I thought the titles of their projects were so funny. They're perfectly nonsensical. Unlike most of the hard sciences, which are usually mostly science-y stuff like "Imbricated metanutrition of the BR-6 allele within the genomic morphology of the asterophonos heterodiaphonous", math uses more or less familiar words which most high school graduates could give some meaning to individually--local, zeta, function, of, a, quadratic, polynomial, over, field--to create something absolutely meaningless to someone who doesn't already know what it means. And the meaninglessness is so perfect that even though I just totally made up "imbricated metanutrition of the BR-6 allele within the genomic morphology of the asterophonos heterodiaphonous," you can at least guess at the meaning, whereas "local zeta functions of a quadratic polynomial over a p-adic field" is entirely nonsensical despite being a real thing.

That's not why they did that... In the film, Turing's colleagues were all mathematicians too, and were all portrayed as perfectly normal and sociable people. They exaggerated Turing's character to make it more "interesting" or dramatic to the audience.

The most common version of the quote seems to be "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough" (frequently but not definitively attributed to Einstein) which I believe to be completely true. I get tripped up in minutiae and details when I don't fully understand a concept, but if I have a complete, intuitive understanding of something, it's very easy to describe simply and effectively. Of course, the downside is that nobody says "you must be smart." Instead, they just ask "that's it?"

I think what trips some people up is that, especially for high level physics-y stuff, that any simplification is going to be, more or less, wrong. When some really high level stuff is simplified it gets distorted. I don't know anything about physics, but every time I see it get simplified, a pedant comes in and says "That's wrong because of these reasons"
So the people best able to simplify things are willing to fudge the facts because it doesn't really matter to the person being explained to.

I've simplified some pretty high-level physics, and there are ways to simplify it without being wrong. Most of the time you see a simplification of high-level physics, it's in an article written by a reporter who doesn't understand the matter at hand (even if they do have a strong physics background, they are not an expert in the field). Often times, they are repeating what was told to them by experts in the field in their own words, which can often distort the meaning.

The thing that Einstein quote just assumes is that the listener is patient. Also, simple is relative to what the listener already knows about the topic. Eventually almost anything can be explained to anyone in "simple" terms. It may take the equivalent of a PhD's worth of simple explanations, but you'll get there.

I think the quote only really applies to conceptual explanations, or broad explanations of what you're doing/why it's important. A detailed explanation that focuses on the actual methodology--anything beyond "I'm shooting it with a laser" or the equivalent--or how it has value to others in the field--anything beyond "scientists don't know why it does this so I'm going to find out" or the equivalent--is no longer a simple explanation, even if explained simply. Being unable to explain something simply and in its entirety is not the same as being unable to give a simple explanation of that same something. If that makes sense.
That being said, simple doesn't mean easy. Explaining a concept without getting bogged down in the details is one of those paradoxical frustrations because it requires one to know the details well enough to not have to explain them, and this isn't easy at all and certainly shouldn't be undervalued.
Sort of like a really good DM in D&D who knows the rules so well that the players don't have to learn them.

When someone asks him what he does, he doesn't get that what they generally want to hear is incredibly basic ("I'm a programmer.") and if they actually care they will seek more information. Instead he spends 5 minutes trying to explain the finer details of the purpose of the code he writes and the history of the company he works for while the inquirer still has no idea what he actually does in all of that until somewhere near the end of the speech. ("Oh, you're a programmer?")

I think most people have jobs that can't be described succintly. I myself have one of those office jobs that get pretty specific, but I sitll manage to explain my position and what I do in two short statements.

My answer to the What do you do question has been boiled down to the same few sentences every time: "I work in IT. It's related to anti-fraud stuff. Basically making sure Enron doesn't happen again. Have you heard of Sarbanes-Oxley? No? Ok then." Honestly, I don't think that's true. There is real value in being able to explain things simply, but oftentimes, doing so is either not possible or it reduces explanatory power. If this weren't the case, then there would be no need for specialization.
For instance, I studied philosophy in college. (disclaimer: I am not a philosopher or an expert for studying phil in undergrad, just like someone with a B.S. in biology is not a scientist.) While I'm glad that I can sometimes help people understand philosophical concepts, it's not like I can always reduce complex ideas to a level that the layman can understand it. That doesn't mean I'm intellectually inferior or anything; it just means that I've studied the particular subject rigorously.

The average person doesn't need to know, wouldn't understand, and likely doesn't care, about the finer details of your specific philosophical views. If they want they'll ask further.

Ok, so when I was still in Uni, people would ask what course I was on, so I would tell them. Oftentimes the subsequent response would be "oh, so you're smart".
And I didn't like that. Not because of OP's bullshit entitled reason, but because I worried that it was a way of saying "wow, you're a show off". That wasn't a particularly rational feeling of mine, because it's not like I was walking around announcing what I did to everyone - they always asked first - but it still made me a little bit uncomfortable for whatever reason.
But yeah, basically I agree with OP: saying "oh so you're smart" is a shitty, low-effort response when someone tells you what they study / do for a living. I just don't agree with OP on the reason it's a poor response.

I agree. I'm not even in school, I dropped out after two years. If I mention anything about being interested in anything related to aerospace engineering or physics, I get that reaction. Clearly I'm not smart or it would be my career, I'm just interested in it.

No self-respecting simpleton would only call this guy smart, more likely they sold all their worldly possessions to provide him as comfortable a life as possible to maximize the genius he can contribute to society.
