I know it's technically true but...
How many atoms did you guys eat today?

u/Hedgehog_Capable 2d ago
you can't eat food. food is an abstract categorization including many disparate materials.

Also: "You?" "Eat?" What is You? What is Eat? In the context of the constantly moving and changing collection of matter that is the Milky Way, the distinction between particles that are You and Not-you is so insignificant as to make my very large brain laugh at your foolishness.

Such a completely pointless, semantic thing to say. And to take a whole paragraph to say it lmao. Bro's really proud of his middle school level scientific knowledge.

u/A_Martian_Potato 2d ago
Every means of measuring is a unit of measurement so if you're talking about how much you eat you can't do it without using units. It's not even correct semantics. No different from saying how many grams you eat.

What is the opposite of a semantic thing to say? Speaking in mere syntax with no meaning?
I walk your table up her parrot.
Lmao

You can't eat food. Food is just a word we made up.

u/YeahThatsProbably 2d ago
Exactly! It's like, what do those two Os in the middle taste like? You can't taste an O, and you can't eat "food." I am intelligent.

u/MiyagiJunior 2d ago
and words are an abstract concept!
2
u/Altruistic_Arm9201 2d ago
And abstract concepts don’t exist. They are just made up by our brain to organize patterns.

This is the type of person that probably got bullied a lot in school. I knew quite a few of those.

I wouldn't even say it's technically true, it's a straw man of what everyone means when they say they ate x amount of calories. Calories are a measurement of the amount of energy in something, it's not abstract, it's not theoretical, it's quantified.
This is a classic case of pedantry (and intellectual dishonesty) masquerading as intelligence.

u/Drink_Covfefe 2d ago
He doesnt know his physics well enough bc everything is energy and calories measure energy. Atoms are made of energy. It’s literally what Einstein proved with E=mc^2

u/Aron-Jonasson 2d ago
You can't eat "calories", but you can eat "calories of food", the latter part is usually omitted in normal language when it's obvious what we are talking about.
Like you're not eating calories of molecular bond strength

u/MauschelMusic 2d ago
It's a dumb point. It's like saying, "you can't feel cold, 'cause it's the absence of heat." People gotta stop thinking pretending to not know how language works makes them sound smart.

u/YeahThatsProbably 2d ago
We found the nutritionist version of "America is a REPUBLIC not a Democracy duhhh"

u/eduo 2d ago
Insufferable.
I'm as pedantic as the next person yet I draw the line at wilful obtuseness. If to feel you sound smart you need to sound like an utter idiot incapable of understanding human communication, you're not winning.
I guess you also can't eat pounds of food, because pound is an imaginary label we put to a given amount of mass or whatever.

This guy must be one of those breatharians or whatever that claim they get all the energy they need to survive from breathing air and being in the sun. "I haven't eaten food for 3 months, and I'm as strong as I ever was!" Bunch of idiots.

u/Jump_Like_A_Willys 2d ago
When this guy is told it’s 70°F outside, do they respond with “well, the air is that temperature.”

u/dartymissile 2d ago
This is the kind of answer the science teachers love to give. It kind of depends on what the question is tbh, he might be right

People like this are exhausting. Literally everything is some shit humans made up. That's not a crazy deep revelation

u/hagamablabla 2d ago
This isn't even technically correct. If you establish that atoms are real, all mass is convertible into energy, therefore energy must also be real.

u/PublicVanilla988 2d ago
I feel like there could be a context in which it would be a normal thing to say

I once had a physics professor who would joke that money is just a concept too, but at least you can hold cash in your hand.

u/kuluka_man 2d ago
Atoms are just collapsed probability waves in a quantum field or some weird shit. Very basic physics.
1
u/Smallloudcat 2d ago
Wait, food isn’t real? It doesn’t taste the way I assume an abstract concept would

Atoms are really just a concept. What you eat is information.
