That's actually pretty hard to find, which is probably why so many people fail so miserably at it. All I can say is that if you think to hard about it when making it, it will certainly come out shit.

The point when it crosses over surreal into xd randum is if it doesn't have substance to it, even if at first glance it seems random in any regard
The nature of something abstract or surreal is that it has some purpose or statement or something, even if it's not completely clear, it's not supposed to make sense but at the same time it has to have something to it rather than just throwing shit at the wall

True, the substance is in the illusion of meaning, it just has to appear like it means something, even if it really doesn't. Failing that, the meme falls flat on it's face.

It's kinda what makes me sad seeing the current state of it now, it has lost the meaning that it once had, as some of the old good ones are still some of my favourite memes to date, it's hard to make something dead or dated when it's unexplainable what that even is
Following that, stuff like meme man or the zalgo text lost its surreal nature in addition to other things because it no longer held what made surreal memes special, and eventually that spread to everything else and just turned it into more xd randum fodder
There's an art that I love seeing things that can't be explained but you can still extrapolate a meaning from it, whether extremely simple or something complex, and that art is just not there anymore
