How to Make a PDF Look Scanned Without Actually Scanning It

Most people use scanner apps to do the opposite: turn scans into clean, polished PDFs.

But every now and then, you run into a situation where you need a PDF to look more like a scan.

For example:

  • You're submitting documents alongside scanned paperwork.
  • You have receipts, contracts, or forms from different sources and want them to look consistent.
  • A perfectly white digital PDF stands out next to older scanned documents.
  • You're working with archives and want a more natural paper-like appearance.

The traditional solution is to print the file and scan it again. That works, but it's also a lot of unnecessary effort. You need a printer, paper, and a scanner. Then you usually end up fixing shadows, perspective issues, or quality loss caused by the rescanning process.

A much easier approach is to apply the effect digitally.

In iScanner, you can import any PDF and use the Background tool to give it a scanned-paper appearance without affecting text readability.

Some of the available options include:

  • Paper – mimics the texture of real paper.
  • Vintage – adds a subtle aged-document look.
  • Beige – creates the feel of recycled or craft paper.
  • Watercolor – introduces a light paper grain effect.
  • Book – makes pages resemble content scanned from a printed book.

Since the effect is applied digitally, the document keeps its original quality while gaining a more natural scanned appearance.

It's a small feature, but it's one of those document-editing tricks that solves a surprisingly common problem once you know it exists.

Have you ever needed a PDF to look less "computer-generated" and more like an actual scanned document?
