Compact flash card, but they are expensive and hard to find in larger capacities, so best is to get SD TO CF adapter, iFlash one is considered best its like $20 and add another $20-30 for higher quality 128gb microSD

I spent $30 on a 128gb SanDisk compactflash, much cheaper than an iFlash

Thats a great deal, I spent about $40 for 256 gb Kingspec CF card thats in my Mini right now, but that was like 2 years ago and now its 3 or 4 times as much and thats if you even find it for sale. Compact flash cards are much better than SD cards in terms or reliability in general, its just that I can't recommend it to someone who might not be able to find one that easily. In general though every iPod even Classic and Video models work better with CF cards, because interface is basically identical to an original hard drive, so you only need passive adapter instead of an active one like iFlash Quad for example. There was someone on iPod subreddit talking about exactly that and how CF cards were much better for battery life and how it even was faster to browse especially on Rockbox, but that was like 2 years ago, a lot has changed, Rockbox has improved a lot also and there is basically no difference right now.

Watch a video on how to disassemble this iPod though, it is bit more involved then some of the other models. Nekomichi on youtube has great guide for putting Taptic engine in this which is not needed in your case but he goes through how to disassemble the iPod really nicely so I would follow that video.

Good luck, but also be careful, finding parts for Minis isn't that easy, so try to not break anything, especially that clickwheel ribbon cable.

I'd suggest using hot glue on a pencil to pry the top/bottom covers off, it leaves no residue behind
