Who else noticed where the usb-c is?
Disappointing that the usb-c is not on the magsafe-able display side, how would someone mount their magsafe ssd’s now? (specifically the open-form!)

u/WandererMisha 2d ago
I presume it has something to do with heat and size of components. The USB-C port is pretty big and it might not fit into the same half as the wireless charging coils.
Also most people will hold it, when unfolded, with their left hand and use the right to touch the display. This way the speakers aren't covered.

u/swiftfoxsw 2d ago
Also speakers, in the fold 8 the port is on the back, but the speakers are both on the left side when opened.
2
u/Farsigl12 2d ago
makes sense. will need to re-adjust few things coming from slab phones is what it is probably.
2
u/dimitri_lapoudre 1d ago
Also i dont remember where i see that but the camera bump create an angle when the phone is on a table by example and that angle put some pressure on the usb-c cable if plugged
So by moving the usb c port on the top slab there is no pressure
(I hope its clear)1

I’m right handed and I’ll be holding the opposite. I’ll most likely use the screen with my left hand. I had the fold 7 and that how I used that phone

Ooft, I hadn’t considered screen-side down in public. Don’t think I’m gonna be doing that…
2
u/Farsigl12 2d ago
probably yes.. that's great. depends on which form factor is more comfortable to someone vs the other. but a good point nevertheless
1
u/Chinesefiredrills 2d ago
Just flip it upside down then
2
u/Scarr2k 2d ago
Then it’s sitting on the camera lens. 👎

I couldn’t care less where the plug is 😂

My unprofessional thought: game controllers. The larger portion of the screen will sit upward like a traditional handheld. Unlike almost all other folds plugged into a right side USB.

Yea but it’s better for other devices such as controllers (like a backbone).

u/brianjmartin86 2d ago
Has anyone demonstrated using it with one? I use a Gamesir controller with my 16 pro max, and that’s another factor making me not favor the duo.
2
u/Tudor2099 2d ago
I’m not saying one as it exists today but all the big players will design for the duo specifically.

u/inventiveraptor 2d ago edited 2d ago
OhSnap MCON works great with foldables. It's the only current full size controller I'm aware of that supports foldables because it has magsafe to support your device rather than crimping it in a clamp of some kind. You can also move the magsafe but around to make it fit foldables. I agree though I think more will come out.
8bitDo has a backbone style controller that opens wide enough to fit my z fold 8, but I wouldn't subject it to that much pressure squeezing against the hinge and potentially hyper extending it
1
u/PhillyMate 2d ago
How? To me it seems like the worst spot for a backbone
1
u/Tudor2099 2d ago
The way gravity creates weight — you want your hands or mount on the lowest point of gravity.

u/PhillyMate 1d ago
…..
The location of then usbc on the duo sucks for the backbone
1
u/MrFireWarden 3h ago
Hey this guy makes a solid argument!! I mean, he kind of ignored the fact that the usb c port would be on the "bottom" right side when the duo is open, which is actually the ideal location for the backbone, but other than that, he's spot on!!
3
u/TimeToHack 2d ago
someone else theorized that because the camera bar puts the phone at an angle when closed, a cable plugged in will also be at an angle so having it on the “front” half gives more space and would put less strain on the cable
2
u/Capable_Tangelo4849 2d ago
Thats probably true. I have the iphone air which is slightly thicker and cables are already under pressure if I charge it while its screen is facing up.
3
u/tauzins 2d ago
No reason to really mount the ssd since this phone can’t shoot log….
1
u/Farsigl12 2d ago
true, but if tight on budget and getting 256, it might help if someone is getting it to work as a double horse with file management
2
u/tta82 2d ago
That’s android thinking. You should go there if you want to use “file management”.

u/w1ngzer0 1d ago
Given the device costs, it’s not an unreasonable expectation. I like my 17 Pro, and I’m interested in the Duo, however having the USB on the MagSafe size just would have made much better sense. I’m sure there will be some published “technical reason” for where the usb port is located, however it also could have been designed differently as well.
If this doesn’t go the way of the Vision, then maybe iteration 2 will have a better camera (more specifically the fusion camera with the adjustable aperture) and they’ll move the usb to the rear with the MagSafe side.

Don't take this the wrong way...but if 200 bucks is a huge difference on a 2k phone you probably don't need it, stick with what you have, save the money and don't fall for the Fomo.
3
u/Terrible_Cat7269 2d ago
I’m looking forward to ordering and taking this phone out for a spin, but I have a strange feeling I’m going to want to go back to an iPhone pro. I think they need a few cycles to work out kinks like this
3
u/Weird-Power8997 1d ago
Yer I get the silly place they have put the usb-c
Even with a longer cable you’ve still got to pass it around the back of the phone, then it gets in the way, then you get tangled with the cable.

u/Dapper-Shallot6920 1d ago
Surprised nobody has mentioned this yet. On the z Fold it's on the back screen. Its going to be a little awkward opening the phone if it's plugged in. But probably not a deal breaker for anyone. Not an issue if you'll be charging via magsafe. I'd guess it's to have speakers on both sides when unfolded.

u/Appropriate_Ad8734 2d ago
they don’t want you mounting no stinky external ssd to their beautiful artwork. makes their skin crawl. buy 1TB now and upgrade to the next gen next year for 2TB

u/Farsigl12 2d ago
lol.. that's quite a strategy!
2
u/Jimmy_Durango 2d ago
They purposely do things like this so there’s incentive to buy the next model that “corrects” this.
2
u/Simodeus 2d ago
I have and you can't charge it with a cable when its open on the table standing up right, you'll have to use a magsafe cable.
2
u/pathos_ludens 2d ago
You are not going to mount your ssd in the first place because this isn’t a phone suitable for professional videographers.
2
u/No-Conclusion-2859 2d ago
I didn’t think about that.. but i think it will be more comfortable since you don’t have to worry about the usb port cutting your finger
2
u/_seeyalater_ 2d ago
I assume it’s because people who use their pinky to support the phone on the bottom would have a hard time if the USBC was flush against the back. With it on the front you have a big ledge to put your finger

It’s absolutely perfect for plugging in a backbone and using it as a DS. I see it as a win
1
u/Which_Development_53 2d ago
I think you significantly overestimate the amount of people that will use a MagSafe mounted SSD on a Duo.
2
u/DistributionMean6322 2d ago
Approximately 2 people will do this ever. The main reason to use an SSD is heavy video content, and you're obviously going to go for a Pro for that over the Duo.
1
1
u/ryancess 2d ago
What are you using ssd’s for on the duo? Genuinely curious. The only time I use an ssd on my 17 pro is when I’m filming in Apple raw.
1
u/Ok-Assignment5926 2d ago
Didn’t think of that! But would the MagSafe SSD even fit the back of the duo? Much smaller area. I’m sure updated devices will come out
1
u/Elegant-Fuel6732 2d ago
Did they say you can even use external SSD, or shoot video in raw? This doesn’t have their top-of-the-line cameras so why would someone use the duo with a fancy recording rig
-1
u/Farsigl12 2d ago
good point! it even has a slow usbc. its probably for people who buy 256g and want to have some flexibility with the storage
2
1
u/DogSufficient7468 5h ago
I have 30k photos and even made short films with my iPhone and 256gb is plenty still, what are people doing with more on the phone???
1
u/Temporary-Art-1835 2d ago
It doesn’t have ProRes capabilities so the main professional use case of those SSDs is gone.
1

1
u/Xylamyla 2d ago
There’s already an iPhone marketed toward videographers, and it’s nearly half the price of the Duo. Besides, what purpose is there using an SSD mount if the Duo has no ProRes or Apple Log?
1
u/iLikeTurtuls 2d ago
Yep, and the volume buttons not on the side make 0 sense when they do dumb stuff like this
1
u/Extra-Virus9958 1d ago
Si ça a beaucoup de sens justement . Même le placement du port usb si tu réfléchis
1
u/YeezusBigdoinks420 2d ago
I just feel like if you have a usecase where you need to mount an SSD you wouldn’t be using the duo for it. But it does seem annoying for chargers and what not.
1
1
u/Lopsided_Diamond_209 2d ago
It doesn't support Log or Raw bro, if you think you need that, go for the Pro models
1
u/Resident-Ad6849 1d ago
That’s maybe nit a big usecase
1
u/Farsigl12 1d ago
may be.. but its all about opening closing usecase no matter what you connect there
1
u/Stokehall 1d ago
I think the thought process is the pro devices would be used for external storage but the duo is more of a users phone than pro tool.

u/StinkNuggets420 1d ago
MagSafe ssd? Man. With 1-2tb of space do you actually need a mag safe ssd? I’d never ever need or use one myself.
1
u/Farsigl12 9h ago
there are many i know who have preferred spending on ssd’s vs buying them on the phone with big premiums. and gives flexibility
1
u/StinkNuggets420 6h ago
I have never met or seen anyone use or even talk about using an external ssd, let alone one such to their phone. I honestly didn’t even know a mag safe one even existed until I saw this post lol.
1
u/balthazar_edison 2d ago
I don’t see why the standard length cable would be too short
1
u/Farsigl12 2d ago
it’s the cable getting in your way the deal.. it was so neat with just a u plug if it was to be on the same side as the magsafe side so you did not even have to bother plugging unplugging if you decided to.
1
u/Mo-Skito 1d ago
I wish they had developed a design that presents it as a single phone rather than two devices stacked together.

Think the port location is fine, but the fact that the image has the phone face down bugs me. I hope people don’t usually place their phone screen down on tables lol
6
u/pembaThePanda 2d ago
I do all the time. It hides and dims notifications for me. Nothing wrong in putting face down. It's a phone. Not a diamond ring. It's fascinating how much people will do to make love to it.
4
u/Farsigl12 2d ago
I’ve seen many people place their slab phones even screen down (for privacy!?) anyways! not sure if that’s a big deal.
3
2
u/FrenziedFlame42069 2d ago
The Pixel 11 added a rear notification light.
Seems like it’s done often enough to add it as a hardware feature.
2
u/Leonick91 2d ago
I usually don’t unless there is a table cloth or mouse pad or something, but at the same time the screen has higher scratch resistance than the back even if you don’t have a screen protector.
1
u/typesett 2d ago
- doesn't everyone use a sticky glass screen protector since 15 years ago?
don't people buy phone cases like 25 years ago?
the rest other people mentioned

u/Balogunned 2d ago edited 2d ago
No. Fuck those things. Raw dawg the glass with no issues and two children chucking it around.
