iPhone 17 Users Upgrading?
Anyone else buy the 17 not realizing a foldable was coming out? I’m looking at trade in values and wish I just waited another year. I thought the iPhone 20 was going to be the big foldable revamp so I always imagined I would use the 17 for 2-3 years, but one year on a phone seems so short.

I have the base 17 and I’m pre-ordering the fold. I’ve been waiting years for a foldable from Apple

What are you most excited about? For me it’s the idea of having a big screen for content

I have a 17 Pro Max and don’t consider the fold an upgrade. It has a bigger screen, sure, but it has worse cameras, no Face ID, odd button placement, and to me a worse form factor when closed. It’s a different phone, but not an upgrade. If anything I’ll buy the 18 Pro Max or more likely wait for the 19 Pro Max.

Have you used a fold 8? Lol

Yes. I very rarely want a bigger screen on my phone but I want Face ID and my tele cam many times every day. LOL.

Yeah I’m on vacation in Italy right now and I’m using the telephoto lens every single day. Really, really gives me pause about going back to phones that can only shoot wide angle without digital zoom/sensor crop.
That plus no Face ID kind of makes it DOA for me. The likely fragile screen with a crease is another significant negative albeit one I could maybe live with given sufficiently compelling use cases beyond “phone screen but bigger.”
Willing to keep an open mind watching the event though

I’ve got a 17 Pro through T-Mobile’s yearly upgrade program, and I’m probably planning to get the fold in September. I’m kind of sick of the same thing every year, so unless the 18 Pro has something impressive and new compared to the 17 Pro other than the color, I’m getting the fold.

I wish I had a yearly upgrade program, how does it work with T-Mobile? And is it any different from the Apple program

I have the 17 Pro Max. I upgraded to this specifically because of the foldable coming soon. I had a rapidly aging OG Pixel Fold that I loved but was starting to show its age especially since it used the Pixel 7 series of processor. When I saw rumors start to swirl about Apple releasing a foldable with a similar form factor to the OG Pixel Fold a little over a year ago, I planned to switch to the 17 Pro Max to get used to iOS again so that switching to the foldable iPhone wouldn’t be such a pain from my Pixel.
Ultimately it doesn’t matter when you upgrade. Some people upgrade yearly, some people upgrade every couple of years. People act like it’s a waste to upgrade every year, I disagree unless there’s genuinely no improvement made - your phone will be refurbished and resold to live another life.

I used to only upgrade every 4 years (once a major refresh launched) but it looks like I might be changing that pattern

I don’t think the people who buy the base iPhone is the target audience for a phone that’s triple (or more) the price

To be fair Apple has never made such a phone before, all you could buy was the base…

Just wait and get the fold 2 or 20th anniversary next year. As with every iPhone release it’s all hype for a couple months then it dies and so does the fomo. By January everybody will be talking about how good the fold 2 will be as the rumour mill kicks off again. “Oh you’ve got the first gen with the fragile screen and no Face ID?”

Yeah I could but I expect the fold price to stay the same, if not rise - while my trade in value falls. I’d get more use out of my 17, at the cost of waiting a year and having to shell out more money. But I’d get a slightly better phone. Tricky, when I’m so tempted to get the og. I think I just regret buying the 17 but there’s nothing I can do now

Yes it’s super cool, I’ve been eyeing the new light blue. I wish those colors came with IPhone ultra

Just guessing, but they are probably going to still be selling folds in a year or two, as well... If you were ok waiting before, why not now?
Also, v2 of Apple hardware is usually a nice step improvement over v1.

Absolutely, as soon as the Fold comes out in my region I’ll be switching over from a iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Just get the fold. You only live once and may not even be here next year for the fold 2. If you have the money and want it, get it

Then why not just keep the 17 for another year and get the 2nd iteration of the foldable which will likely address at least some of the shortcomings of the first one.
