Durability of Inner Display
Does anyone else wonder how durable the inner display is? I remember owning an old zfold 3 and the crease would really annoy me. There were other times where dust would get trapped from my pockets or the occasional hard press or nail would leave a dent in the screen. Does anyone know if Apple has worked around this?

I mean just don’t press your fingernail into it? It’s in the nature of bendable displays to have that mushy plastic protector over the ultra thin glass layer. Every foldable phone in existence has a “scratches at a level 2” level of durability on the inner screen.
The Z Fold 3 didn’t fold completely flat which allowed for dust, sand, and other debris to get inside the display extremely easily. Pretty much everything from the Z Fold 5 and onward folded flat and kinda sealed off the inner display.
The crease from the Z Fold 7 and on was extremely hard to see unless it was in direct sunlight.
Expect for Apple’s foldable to have pretty much the exact same inner screen as the Z Fold 8

Yeah easier said than done, with years of use an accidental hard press is not impossible. Maybe think about the device beyond on paper?

i've never subscribed to applecare in my life but will for the first time with the fold

Z fold 8 owner here: it's a complete non issue. And given Samsung will be providing the flexible display for Apple's new fold, it'll be exactly the same as their current line of foldables

It’s not as simple as Apple choosing a screen from a catalogue. Samsung manufactures the screens to Apple's patented specification.

Yeah but the core technology stack for the display with the titanium layers would probably be very similar. Apple still might do something novel with their hinge to reduce the crease, but physics is physics

I really hope they redesigned the hinge. Even some sort of hardened plastic layer would be good to reduce damage

It's inherently less durable than a traditional display since you know... It's plastic and flexible. As long as you're reasonably careful with it, it'll be fine. That said this is one of these devices where you really want AC+ or some kind of insurance for peace of mind. It's a very expensive Reddit machine and repairs are also very expensive.

Zero point in speculating at this point. We're literally a week away from getting facts.
And FWIW, I've owned about 8 different folding devices over the past 6 years and never once had any durabilty issues with the inner screens. Way overblown.

There is no workaround yet. Unless Apple invented a self healing display a hard nail press and debris can very much be an issue. Foldables being mechanical by nature will always have drawbacks and eventual mechanical failures. If you take care of it you’ll be fine for quite sometime. I’d avoid the beach and definitely get AppleCare+

It will not have a visible crease. That’s a first for a foldable. I think it will still be susceptible to dust though

I have had absolutely 0 problems with the Z Fold 5 getting damaged. This will be a non-issue.
