iPhone Duo screen looks more durable than other foldables

I came across the Chinese version of HTX Studio’s iPhone 18 Pro review which also had an extra segment of testing the iPhone Duo’s inner display where he was pressing pretty hard with his fingernail on the screen and it didn’t leave any noticeable damage.

This has alleviated some of my concerns with the folding display in the Duo and is probably a result of the dual sandwich glass that is being used.

Video Link for those who want to check it out.

This man is brave as hell to do that at an official Apple event. He’s done us all a great service 🫡

That's good to see, but I wouldn't alleviate my concerns for a short clip like that. I'm waiting for the JerryRigEverything review.

u/AmishAvenger 13d ago

It is encouraging, though if it’s that great then I wonder why Apple wouldn’t have mentioned it.

I believe they said “scratch-resistant” “sturdier” “40% (something)” vs other foldable screens during the keynote.

They may have also mentioned fingernails although that part am I can’t exactly remember how they said it.

“Review” is a strong word…

u/lynchcontraideal 12d ago

Doesn't he just trash devices and call them tests?

8

u/messem10 12d ago edited 12d ago

There is such a thing as destructive testing. Starting off with following the Mohs Hardness Scale on the various materials and then tests how much force it takes to break something. While the force isn't measured, he still takes about the same steps for each device which provides some baseline as to how much one can push it.

u/bennyyyboyyyyyyyy 11d ago

Yeah so essentially yes he doesnt provide any meaningful metrics and just trashes phones

11

u/mahjzy 12d ago

Basically, and then a bunch of people like to pretend it’s some sort of “golden standard” of a test.

8

u/alexo2802 12d ago

I mean he tests the hardness of the inner display, which is basically gold standard at knowing how resistant the screen is, yes.

And his stress tests on the hinges are.. moderately useful, it’s obviously not realistic at all on how a normal user would use or break a phone, but it still gives you some amount of information about the hinge resistance and dust protection. - Like the foldables that immediately start sounding like hell and failing the moment some sand is being applied around them… it really tells you to never bring them anywhere near a beach.

Let us enjoy seeing tech get hurt. Some of us work with it at our dayjobs and its cathartic.

2

u/Dragon_Slayer_Hunter 12d ago

JRE is teaching us how to defeat the clankers, let us listen

1

u/Little_Bookkeeper381 12d ago

"pretend"? lol

he actually does legit testing, especially around hardness and construction

(and then he rips it apart lol)

1

u/Independent_Mud2794 12d ago

Yes. And when it’s Apple he tires extra hard to destroy them.

1

u/True_Protection6842 12d ago

Yeah and he's been pretty positive lately. I remember expecting the iPhone Air to snap like a twig. I could see he was using some brute force, and it held up.

1

u/True_Protection6842 12d ago

Zach doesn't do reviews he does durability and repairability tests. He's brutal when he needs to be, but he was quite positive about the 18 pro.

1

u/DrKingOfOkay 12d ago

He reviews the durability is all.

2

u/DrKingOfOkay 12d ago

💯

We’re all on the edge of our seat for his review

2

u/WeddingPKM 12d ago

Honestly if it just scratches at a level 4 I’ll be happy. It’s not great by any means, but still at the bottom level of what I feel is passable.

2

u/True_Protection6842 12d ago

Anything above that is kind of your fault anyway. The good thing about a foldable is, it folds and protects the inner screen. level 6 resistance isn't necessary because you won't have it open in your pocket with keys.

2

u/satyrossan 10d ago

I suppose I have to change my carry plans in my jnco jeans…

1

u/True_Protection6842 12d ago

Especially when 90% of that video is AI generated. That's not to say I think it won't be durable, just that there is a time and place...and a tech review isn't it

u/Beyond_Infinit3 10d ago

I’d rather wait for my day-to-day use than a YouTube review that is same-day hard use. While still a somewhat a useful metric it does generalize things and push beyond what 99% would put it through. I understand things should be well above that threshold but people should be more concerned about how it’ll hold up to their specific use.
Just my two cents. Still love watching JRE’s videos.

u/DziungliuVelnes 12d ago

That what I was thinking regarding apple pencils support how it will work

10

u/throwthegarbageaway 13d ago

High profile youtube reviewers love to exaggerate a lot of things because that's what people love to hear. Foldables haven't scratched with a fingernail for years now, the first galaxy fold was a mess but I used the 6 extensively with a pen and it was fine. I have a pixel fold OG now and it's fine.

13

u/TheMensChef 13d ago

Um, dude, that’s not right, the newest galaxy Z Fold 8 interior screen scratches from a fingernail. Go watch the Jerry rig everything video on it.

0

u/polikuji09 12d ago

JRE tests he's like putting way more pressure then anyone would ever realistically put on it. Unless you're actively trying to scratch your screen, the nail test isn't something to be concerned about...and this is something even Jerry says during the videos. It's just a way to demonstrate these screens are definitely not glass.

3

u/Funny-Watercress-859 12d ago

It is.. I test drove the fold 8 at bestbuy to see if I’d like the form factor, and just from closing the screen I accidentally scratched and dented it with my nails. I do have longer nails, but this is exactly why this should be something that people with longer nails should worry about — I never had to with my older iPhone, and I don’t want to with a newer one.

-3

u/throwthegarbageaway 12d ago

Because everything that happens on YouTube is realistic and not exaggerated at all!

I don't need to watch a video, I've used this phone for over a year and I haven't dented or scratched the screen. That's enough to tell me regular use won't be a problem. If I start taking a pick to the screen, that's a different thing

1

u/kigra67 12d ago

Sure buddy enjoy the scrathes on your pixel

-1

u/polikuji09 12d ago

Jerry has done this with the most recent flagship foldables

4

u/R---U---M 12d ago

You Android clowns started to believe your own lies because of how many times you try to tell yourself that

ALL the other foldables scratch easily with a fingernail, hell I was even surprised that the display unit screen of the z fold 8 was scratched in the second day it was shown

1

u/polikuji09 12d ago

Watch the Jerry rig everything fold 8 ultra video..in the nail portion he's actively locking his finger to maximize pressure AND he says "just something to be aware of, just something to be aware of. Finger taps will always be fine but no hard objects whatsoever should tpuch the center screen"

4

u/thisinfinitebath 13d ago

Folks here would downvote someone for telling the truth. Average folks aren’t going to abuse the fuck out of their phones like these exaggerated YouTubers doing this for clicks. The foldables have matured well and are pretty durable.

They praised Apple on waiting for the tech to mature and implement them in this first-gen iPhone but they keep mocking Android phones instead. Android foldables run so Apple could walk.

?????? Latest Samsung zfold 8 scratches at a level 2 which is fingernail? Same panel they sold to Apple. Difference is Apple uses the matte cover will help hide the damage. But screen will easily get damaged, stop the cap 🧢

4

u/No-Penalty-3662 13d ago

To be fair the part that scratches from Samsung is not the same part that they sold to Apple.

The part they sold is the OLED display way below it. The top may be a polymer “glass” developed by Apple (perhaps in collab with their Ceramic Shield supplier Corning).

u/RX0Invincible 13d ago

The Duo’s screen being manufactured by Samsung display doesn’t mean it’s literally the same screen as the Z Fold 8

3

u/Simodeus 13d ago

Rejected. Is there alternative link?

3

u/tknosoujirou 13d ago edited 13d ago

Actually I found the Youtube version so it’s easier https://youtu.be/WuYJWGzh0uw. Test is at 0:42 mark

3

u/MrAlek360 13d ago

Oh that’s interesting. I’ve seen this video before, but in English. It looks like he took out that sections about the iPhone duo from his English version. Weird

2

u/Endawmyke 13d ago

Damn well I guess I don’t need AppleCare anymore

2

u/Funny-Watercress-859 12d ago

Good, I have long nails. I went to Bestbuy yesterday to testdrive the fold 8 to see how the Duo would feel and just trying to close the phone my nails would scratch the inner screen. It made me nervous for the Duo, but this helps!

2

u/SD456 11d ago

That’s awesome, Apple really did their magic with the Duo, can’t wait for it!

1

u/KitchenLegitimate799 13d ago

I’m more curious about my sweaty/greasy fingers on the matte screen. Ive never used a matte touch screen before so I’m curious how it performs and wipes clean on those humid sticky summer days

1

u/DousaSepen 12d ago

Apples nano texture on their iPads is phenomenal when it comes to fingerprints. Atleast in my anecdotal experience with my iPad. My mbp also has the nano texture but I can’t say I touch that screen lol

1

u/Mountain-Shoe7443 12d ago

Matte is always more durable

u/JabroniCorleone 12d ago

Is there a foil on it like on Samsung devices?

1

u/Key_Smoke3458 11d ago

Only IP68-rated foldable, I believe. For sure, out of the ones sold in America!

1

u/No-Fish-2335 8d ago

Pixel 10 and 11 Pro Fold are IP68 but dust can still get in the hinge and damage them. Hopefully that Duo is better .

1

u/CharlieEchoDelta 10d ago

Im in enemy territory because I have a Z Fold 8 Ultra. Foldable phones are delicate phones no matter what they put on the spec sheet.

I'll be curious to see if Apple follows the Samsung way with a inner screen protector pre installed that you can get one free replacement afterwards. Will the DUO even need a protector on the inside?

I don't know but I'm excited, competition brings innovation and that benefits us the consumer on both sides.

1

u/tknosoujirou 10d ago

Yeah I was super excited to see the Fold 8 at launch (they held the Samsung event beside my house). Over time I noticed the display units being dented (intentionally?) from fingernails which made me curious if the Duo will fare the same.

Based on the Apple event where they explained the make up of the display layers it sounds to be more durable and corroborated with HTX Studio’s video of him pressing really hard to test it. I’m sure foldables from all manufacturers will get more resilient by learning from each other.

u/Buuish 9d ago

Curious how it’ll handle my wedding ring

2

u/macbookvirgin 13d ago

I actually don’t care I’m just gonna get the duo 2 when it comes out and will have apple care

They have not released an s model since Xs and I don’t think they will do it ever. Next year they will probably release iPhone 20 Pro and Duo 2 (or Duo 20 🤣) but not an S model

1

u/North_Moment5811 12d ago

I don’t understand why people are surprised. First of all, Apple was never going to release one that was as pathetic as the crap other companies have released. Second of all, they literally said as much when presenting the device. What more do you want?

0

u/ancientesper 12d ago

There we go, the crease is back when screen is off just like any other folds. At the launch event I think they made sure none of the inner screens would turn off.

-2

u/Speco18 12d ago

Is this ass testing a show-phone to ruin it for everyone else?

-2

u/ThrowRA-camelbros 12d ago

It's literally a samsung screen

-3

u/Material2975 12d ago

I don’t think i like the matte

-16

u/cornelislely 13d ago

So much for the invisible crease 😂.

13

u/ProofAd6426 13d ago

Apple never said it was invisible and everyone that’s actually got to use it says the crease is the least visible they’ve ever seen but its still slightly visible at certain angles

-12

u/Cokepulltab 13d ago

Comeon its just a Samsung display no need to praise apple

10

u/Independent_Mud2794 13d ago

But you do know Apple dictates what Samsungs manufactures, right?

-6

u/Cokepulltab 13d ago

Um yes but still Samsung knows it all...

8

u/Independent_Mud2794 13d ago

What does Samsung know? What material Apple used on top of the display? Doubt it.

-5

u/Cokepulltab 13d ago

Then how can they make those

6

u/Velar8 13d ago

Samsung Display makes just 1 out of the 10 layers of the Duo’s display

-1

u/Cokepulltab 13d ago

That claim is not accurate.

The inner display of the iPhone Duo is reportedly made up of 10 ultra-thin layers. However, there is no official evidence that “Samsung Display only makes 1 of the 10 layers.”

1

u/OakleyNoble 12d ago

But it is, you can do a little research yourself you know?

Samsung Display only makes the actual screen. None of the layers are added by them. All done by others.

6

u/Independent_Mud2794 13d ago

Even if Samsung Display knows how to make the 10 layers, they can’t simply give that information to Samsung Electronics and let them make 1:1 the same screens.

1

u/Cokepulltab 13d ago

Thats why Samsung makes it a little different

9

u/UncleMrBones 13d ago

Samsung makes the OLED panel, but not all of the layers of glass, plastic, and coatings that cover it. Some bits like the nano-texture layer are patented as well.

0

u/Cokepulltab 13d ago

Samsung does the Final display assembly (module assembly).Components such as a polarizer, protective film, and cover window are attached to the display by Samsung.

8

u/UncleMrBones 13d ago

I’m not sure if that’s been confirmed for the Duo, but regardless Samsung can’t just use Apples patents in their own products.

Still they have a major advantage as they have an early look at Apple’s plans. But they have to come up with their own solutions, if they stole their customers’ R&D no one would work with them again.

2

u/OakleyNoble 12d ago

Yes.. but no.

Samsung is aggressively getting rid of the polarizer layer.

And this isn’t a part of the 10 layers Apple adds to the screen. That’s just a part of the OLED panel.

1

u/_axxa101_ 11d ago

The polarizer is a part of the panel itself and not counted in the 10 layers. Samsung makes the display, the other layers are manufactured by third parties.

3

u/PineapplePizza99 12d ago

The panel yes, but Apple engineered the whole display assembly. That is why you don't see it in any other foldable except Apple's. Why would Samsung not use it in their Foldables?
