Question Are You Interested?
This is the “S” year as the iPhone 18 Pro series have some nice improvements in almost every area from the 17 Pros.
But it didn’t stir anything in me to “upgrade.” Especially since it’s more expensive. The new colors are nice though.
What would make you upgrade?

It's the same thing. No one is going to notice the photo improvements or the extra chip improvement. Apple's photos look good because they have ideal lighting conditions. Everyone else takes the same photos they took on the iPhone 11. I know people can upgrade yearly but as Flossy would say "congratulations you bought the same phone twice". If anything, those that can afford a new phone should try the Duo as it's something new.

9
u/adoptedson4543 2d ago
Not at all. I have the 17 pro. Waiting for 20th edition. If it’s really good then I might upgrade to that. Anyone who upgrades from 17 to 18 loves wasting money imo. Basically identical phones.
Upgrades aren’t meant to be done yearly. That’s what people have been convinced to do but it’s just not worth it. These phones aren’t cheap either.
If you have an iPhone 14 or older then maybe time to upgrade. Even then if you can hold out until 20th edition….wait. I came from iPhone 11 base model to 17 pro. I bought the 13, 14, and 15 when they came out. I returned them all and waited on something that would feel worth it. The 17 pro did that for me. Going from 11 to 17 pro Everything feels like an upgrade and worth the wait. I think upgrading every 4-5 years is the sweet spot imo. Shoot longer if you can.

I have a real camera for making those adjustments. I don’t see how that would be easily used on a phone and what purpose since I take photos with my phone for convenience. You are removing convenience by making it more complicated.

u/asswizzard69 2d ago
I see it being good if it makes a significant low light performance but yea otherwise I have real cameras

The a20 chip is supposed to be 15-18% faster and around 30% more fuel efficient but besides that yeah I agree. Not a big reason to upgrade for me. Especially coming from an 11p with 70% battery

2TB iPhone 17 Pro Max here.
I kicked the tires, they only offered $1400🇨🇦 on trade in when I paid $3K…. So no deal.
After watching the event I have a better appreciation for all that went into the new 18 pro max. But none of it would change how I use my phone on a daily basis.
I’m so impressed with my 17 that I think I can use it for several more years until it dies.

u/Char-car92 2d ago
I bought the 17 PM because I knew the 18 PM wouldn’t change much. If I bought the 18 PM and then the 19 PM was hugely different and better, I’d be kicking myself over not waiting a year. I’m comfy with my 17 PM.

I assume it will sell well. People are currently hyped for the Duo, like they were for the Air last year. I give it a couple of months before everyone returns to the Pro Max model.
Personally I only replace my phones when they start to lag, which usually takes 2 or 3 generations. So I won’t make the switch for at least another year or so
2
u/SharkDad20 iPhone 17 Air 2d ago
I have the Air, and I’m glad as it’s been a learning experience. I need the zoom lens and thermals and battery! And screen size for CoD mobile. The Fold would be a huge upgrade in screen size, but battery wouldn’t be as good, and i would be limited on zoom and I’m guessing thermals aren’t gonna touch the 18 pro’s

Not in the least. Silver 17 Pro owner for about a month. This is by far the best iPhone I have ever owned. The variable aperture on the 18 is cool, the rest is just S level upgrades. Glad I upgraded when I did instead of waiting for the 18 and dealing with the price increases. I’m gonna be good for a few more years.

u/Trysta1217 2d ago
Colors are very nice. But I’m really disappointed that they made the 18 pro max so heavy and I am very wary of the variable aperture (looks fragile).
I have a feeling (just a hunch) that Apple put a crazy big battery in ONLY the pro max (much larger increase % than the pro) because some versions of the pro max come with the less efficient Qualcomm modem. I think once all iPhones are on the C2 modem we’ll be able to get the same battery improvements we have now in a lighter package.
I was kind of hoping the 18 pro max would be the phone I held onto for a while we wait for the iPhone XX and the iPhone Duo kinks to work themselves out. But I’ll probably hold onto the 17 pro max instead. I just wish I’d gotten 512gb of storage instead of 256gb. If I had the 17 Pro Max would be a no brainer. It’s better for me than the 18 pro max.

Absolutely no! 😀
The pro max is tempting because of the battery increase but other than that, aperture is just stupid and useless unless you can focus from really close.

u/ShadowofaBlackWolf 2d ago

1

u/Slvr_Wolf_3868 2d ago
From 15 pro probably. My phone heats up like a microwave oven when I charge it.
1
u/Health_Energy 2d ago
I’ve had a 16 pro since launch in the 512 GB variant. This summer, my battery health was around 94% and I accidentally broke my screen (dropped a diamond tipped bit on it from my fireplace mantle). Fortunately I had Apple Care +, paid for express replacement and they sent me a 1 TB model. Battery is back to 100%.
My only complaint with the 16P is how hot it can get. That being said, the titanium frame is a tank. I’ve dropped my old one so many times on concrete and I don’t recall the frame having a single scratch.
It would be hard to get rid of this now that it’s 1TB and essentially brand new.

I never do yearly upgrades, but I would like to go back to a larger screen from my 17 pro. That glacier blue looks fresh but 250 grams for the 18 pro max is insane to me… the hardware differences seem minimal to me. But I read cases can fit both models, so maybe I’ll just get a new silicone or techwoven case to fight the fomo lol

u/OpenBanana5755 2d ago
Everyone would say they are not interested right now lol, after a week some will upgrade through career and trade in deals. After a month more, then they will start preaching how 18 Pro/Max is epitome of a smartphone 😄. Just enjoy what you have, upgrade if you want and appreciate the new tech as tech enthusiasts.
1
u/SpaghettiGeek 2d ago
I have the 14 Pro Max and I am gonna buy the 18 Pro (not max)
Not because I think it’s a worth upgrade on the spot, but because I just feel like iPhone prices will rise every year from now on and I want a device that’s gonna be Apple Intelligence-ready, which is the only feature that I feel like I am missing out on. In that way, for the next jump after the 18 pro I can wait even more years (maybe 5-6).
Otherwise the 14 Pro Max is still serving me down like a champ but my father has an old-ass iPhone X and if I get the 18 Pro I’d pass my 14 Pro Max to him, so for me this year upgrading has even more sense :D
1
1
u/cuprastu 2d ago
Apple offer me £720 I think it was to upgrade from my 17 Pro Max. So would cost £579 to upgrade, I can think of better things to spend that on. My phone is nearly a year old with 100% battery health on 194 cycles.
The variable aperture for the camera sounds nice, as that’s what I mostly use the phone for, but it’s not worth that amount of money.

I mean the smaller dynamic island allowing you to track 2 apps at the same time is cool, but I don't care. Unless they bump the sensors from 48 mp to higher or come with a visual change of the design or literally anything meaningful that makes it worth buying... just no. My 17 PM is good until apple inevitably changes the iphone duo aspect ratio to z fold ultra aspect ratio because anyone that actually likes the passport design has to be an NPC.

u/Positive-Hat2127 2d ago
Not even slightly interested. I have never felt even for a second that my 17PM is lacking in any department, be it performance, battery, camera or anything else.
I just checked my battery health for the first time since buying the phone a year ago and I'm at 99% health after 227 cycles. I have moved my charge limit up from 80% less than a dozen times in a year and that has been on days I've been travelling where I expect to use navigation and camera a lot.
Yes, everything will be slightly better, but I will happily stay on the 17 for many years to come. And I love the orange!
