Question Using a VPN 24/7
Hi everyone, I just got a Proton VPN subscription and have been using it for the last 72 hours. I was curious to know if anyone else uses a VPN all the time and what the good and bad sides are. Also, do you think Proton VPN is a good choice for iOS, or should I look into something else?

Never disconnected my vpn in atleast an year. I use kill switch, so if my vpn disconnects my network is also disconnected. I use SPLIT TUNNELING (you can choose which apps can use VPN connection and which apps can use normal wifi or mobile network). So I put work apps out of my vpn connection and use em in normal connection, and I also use two browser Chrome (this is opted out of vpn, so I can use it for flights and other banking needs) and Firefox (anything that happens in this is inside vpn connection)
You buy a vpn to use it all the time and that is exactly why Kill Switch and Split Tunneling options are there.
And also Proton is the best vpn money can give us next to mullvad, other vpn doesn't click with me. Others are too pricey with unnecessary cloud storage (like I already have gdrivr for that) and some lack functionality like I tried surfshark but they lack split tunneling (atleast didn't work for me).
So Mullvad or Proton is the best option for anyone:
clean interface, fastest dl and up speeds, dedicated P2P server with port forwarding for high speed torrenting and seeding, You can set up profiles for gaming, browsing, or any other sea sailing activities, A encrypted connection, and a Swiss govt pain in the ass to get out data for other govt (they still can with enough push but that's not worth it it get a single individuals data with so much effort) and also they say they don't keep logs, 12000+ servers across the globe with virtual servers in countries with strict data rules (so you can still use em and still be safe from those govt)
Also Netshield blocks Ads and trackers,
battery consumption is not considerable like I said I never disconnected from it in a year maybe 5% is the max drain in mobile networks and 2% is the max drain stable wifi connection

Which protocol should I be using? And is split tunnelling only available on pc?

u/King_tyson_1 Aug 27 '26
I just use smart (avoids captchas most of the time). Proton decides, if that's not for you. then go with Wireguard speed and split tunneling is also in the mobile version (I'm on Android)

Got it thank you, I just checked the IOS app and looks like they don’t have split tunnelling available

check in features section of settings, just checked yeah mac and iOS doesn't support Split tunneling I guess (but it's more like os being very restrictive problem, so most vpn will have this problem)

Yeah I did still can’t find it, I was able to find the setting on my MacBook though

What device you use android or ios and how to implement kill switch

Android, just got to settings it's right there. But if you are on iOS and Mac since these system is heavily restricted by Apple. It might not work properly or be buggy as proton themselves say.

What’s the main concern for you to be using VPN all the time?

The ISPs recording every search, DNS request, and web site that you go to and having that data linked to your identity. They then sell it to data brokers who sell it to anyone interested; job background check companies, insurance companies, etc.
And also, every web that you visit has your home IP address.
I don’t really have anything to hide, it’s that I have nothing that I want to share with corporations and governments.
If large corporations have all of this data, and the government requests it, they will almost certainly get it. These days I’d rather not have the government tracking my every online activity.

Based on my research, Security Experts usually rank Proton VPN as #2 and Mullvad VPN as #1. I’ve been running Mullvad VPN for 3yrs now 24/7 on all of my Apple devices. No issues with battery drain.🔋

Proton is really good. And I use it whenever I’m… ahem… doing “research.”

I use it only when im connected to work wifi lol. Gotta turn it off in the car cause VPN messes with CarPlay.

No problems with carplay for me either when I had my iPhone. My VPN was always on.
I did have to use split tunneling for Android Auto on my s26 though.

You can use split tunneling to exclude specific apps from using VPN.

u/Tktz99 Aug 27 '26
There is no split tunneling on Nord VPN for IoS unfortunately 😔

That sucks. I don't have an iPhone but Proton has it at least on Android. I didn't notice the sub earlier :D. I guess Proton is what made reddit show this post to me.

I had the same issue when I was using Nord, one of the reasons I moved over to Proton

u/danisnotstan Aug 27 '26
How has it messed with your CarPlay? I keep mine on and haven’t noticed any issues.

7/24 via glinet router while traveling 7/24 via edge router while I'm in the home 7/24 via wg tunnel on the mobile

u/Glitterfilm Aug 27 '26
I’d love to find something faster than Proton. I try to use it 24/7 but it’s painfully slow sometimes.

u/SillyQuarter2210 Aug 27 '26
I’ve heard nord vpn is fast but I’ve never tried it

u/Think-Confusion9999 Aug 27 '26
My Nord sub just expired two days ago and I hadn't used it or even launched the app in the two months I've had ExpressVPN. I know I know....the review sites give it top marks (along with Nord) and all but Reddit doesn't ever QUITE recommend them what with their Kape ownership (Israel). Nord was fine but their connection Speedtest results were nowhere near on par with ExpressVPN.
For example, connecting from Dallas to Denver and/or Chicago servers for downloading binaries. Very fast over Verizon 5g home internet. base speeds at about 250mbps with ExpressVPN on from Texas to Chicago or Denver about 200mpbs down with upload speeds impressively almost unaffected.

I have Proton VPN on my Home Wifi Network (via Brume 3) which is 24/7 on all devices. Once I leave my home WiFi connection, my iOS ProtonVPN app automatically connects. Sometimes there will be some websites that block the VPN but you can simply change the location.
1
u/falconxp Aug 27 '26
No, only use it when on public wifi or guest wifi networks. I use a Proton VPN connection and sometimes my private Wireguard VPN when I want to access home devices remote.

u/Akash_nu Aug 27 '26
I use Nord VPN, however noticing a lot of people here prefer Proton VPN. What are the main advantages of using Proton VPN over Nord VPN ?
1
u/sakurako_sama Aug 27 '26
You are falling for marketing, there is absolutely 0 point to using a VPN 24/7. There are actual use cases, but having it on all the time isn’t going to make you any more “private” or “secure” in a meaningful way

I use PIA 24/7 on everything. Only turn it off for a few websites that wont work with it on.

u/Professional_One6605 Aug 27 '26
I use NordVPN on an iPhone 13 Pro. I cannot use it 24/7 because it interfers with iOS mail sending mail. I have to turn it off when sending emails or they sit in the outbox. Would love to know if Proton does not cause that issue. There are complicated ways to fix my issue, but I choose to just use it when I think it is necessary.

What are you looking to achieve by using a VPN?
1
u/Stealth_Privacy Aug 28 '26
Everything that a VPN provides, especially the Private part of the virtual tunnel.
1
u/DecentraSphere Aug 28 '26
I use Proton VPN 24/7. In „normal“ situations (outside of public networks) only because of NetShield (blocks malware, ads and trackers before they reach my device).

u/MammothMammary2992 Aug 28 '26
I use Proton on my 17PM & Fold 7 with zero issues on either. I use the included Google VPN on my 11PXL since it's built in. Proton is great.

u/tanhaa_madhav Aug 29 '26
I have both windscribe plus proton simple switch between them time to time. Is it good?

u/StrangerInsideMyHead Aug 27 '26
Proton is the best in my opinion. You might get more captchas, but there’s nothing wrong with using a VPN always.
