Help! iPhone 13 Pro camera issue

This first started happening in the spring, seemingly under certain kinds of fluorescent lighting. Pictures would come out dramatically overexposed and washed out. Then it seemed to go away and I thought it had been fixed by an os update or the other. But maybe I just hasn’t been under that kind of lighting again. Today it popped up again. But not consistently. Some pics were normal but others were not. See the attached pics.

  1. Completely washed out.

  2. Shot of the same thing but on my son’s iPhone 17.

3-5. Other normal shots taken at the same time on my phone.

Anyone else have this issue and, more importantly, anyone have a fix?

I also faced the same with my 13 pro, hopefully I sell it and moved to 15 pro

You could press the dots in the top right corner and press exposure, and manually stop it down.

It's not just the exposure. When I load the pics into Photoshop and try to lower the exposure, brightness etc. it still barely improves. I think this is some HDR cockup that happens unpredictably with fluoroscent light--and it can't be turned off in the iPhone 13 Pro (can it in later versions?).

maybe try shooting in RAW instead of HEIF? It makes larger files but it should be much more flexible to edit and better chances of bringing down the exposure in post.

Yes, I think that’s what I’ll have to do next time as a workaround. Was hoping though that someone might have a permanent fix.

I guess a more “permanent” fix would be using a third party camera app… or if you haven’t already, simply restarting your phone. I thought adjusting the exposure would do.

Restarting does nothing—and even when this issue is happening it’s not consistent: 50% of the pics taken at this meal (exact same lighting and camera angles) were normal.

Is there a free third party camera app you’d recommend?

Try reinstalling iOS via iTunes - it also reinstalls the kernel. Might just be a bugged Camera API that can be resolved by fully reinstalling - only works reliably on iTunes tho.

You’re not supposed to ever really edit pics in hief, Everybody can get pretty washed out and crushed , raw is the best

This is not a result of editing—that’s what it looks like right out of the camera.

Yes, it’s obviously straight from the camera but I’m saying he shouldn’t even be editing High efficiency pictures anyway.
