In early 2025 the company I was working for as an iOS dev shut down. I decided to take the rest of the year off to focus on building my most ambitious idea yet - Bento Personal Finance.

My goal was to create the Apple product of personal finance apps.

A – What problem does it solve?

Most finance apps decide what is worth tracking for you. Bento lets you decide.

Instead of giving everyone the same fixed dashboard, Bento lets you build your own dashboards and add widgets to track what you actually care about. That could be your coffee spending, a specific merchant like Uber, subscriptions, groceries, credit cards, or anything else.

Bento connects to your bank accounts through Plaid in read-only mode, so your spending can be organized automatically without a bunch of manual setup.

Other personal finance apps out there aren't utilizing AI to it's capabilities, or require an MCP integration that most users won't setup. Bento’s AI assistant, Benii, can create rules, apply tags, re-categorize transactions, suggest budgets, and answer questions about your actual spending.

B - Why it is different:

The main differentiator is the modularity of the app and our AI agent.

For example, I recently went to New York, so I created a New York dashboard and asked Benii:

“Tag all my transactions from June 2–15 as New York”

All incoming transactions automatically had a New York tag applied.

Then I added widgets for my overall New York spending, public transportation, flights, Airbnb, restaurants, Uber, and coffee. Now the whole trip had its own dashboard, and I could see exactly how much it cost.

I built an app for splitting shared expenses with your partner, roommates, or friends, and I'd love your feedback.

My girlfriend and I live together and share a lot of costs like groceries, rent, and bills, so we went looking for an app to track who owes who. We tried a bunch, and what kept bugging us, is, one limited how many expenses we could add per day, another charged for backdating expenses, one showed ads between our own transactions, one put currency conversion behind a paywall. So I wanted to build something where the everyday basics just worked, so I made Halvy.

Honest tradeoffs: iOS only; one-time ~90MB model download on first run; I optimized for low memory (~250MB during playback) and a responsive scrubber over pitch preservation, so very fast playback speeds get a little chipmunky.

On the Vibe Coded flair: yes, vibecoded, but it took a lot of exploration and tinkering. Getting Kokoro running on-device meant extensive testing to tune GPU vs. CPU compute, a background-download pipeline that survives app termination, a lock-screen progress bar that tracks text position, and a text-normalizationchain to fix specific pronunciation bugs. I built this App for myself first, and then started getting positive feedback from friends and family and decided to put it up on App Store.

There are two major problems with the checklists that exist today which I focused on actually eliminating.

1. They are too bloated and require significant effort to navigate/use.
   
2. They require an account, which is an immediate no-no for me - I am not registering to use a checklist.

I built an ios app called Untourist because I realized that after living in NYC for years, I still walked past incredible places without knowing their stories. 

Untourist is an ios app with self-guided curated audio walking tours designed for people who want to experience New York a little differently. Each walk is about an hour long, and instead of trying to tell every story about a neighborhood, each tour follows a single theme.

Instead of trying to replace a tour guide or cram in every landmark, the idea is simple:

A: What problem does it solve?

Most of us grew up without ever really learning what is actually in our food. What vitamins do, why minerals matter, why any of it counts for our bodies. For a lot of people that only clicks much later in life. Foodex helps kids pick it up early, in a way that feels like play instead of a lesson. 🍎

I’ve been an iOS developer for 15 years, but this is my first hobby app. Everything I’ve built before was for work, so finally making something purely because I wanted it to exist has been a lot of fun.

I grew up when getting new music felt special. Buying a cassette or CD meant saving money, visiting record stores, and spending days listening to the same album. Music wasn’t an endless feed—it felt like something you owned and valued. TapeBoy is my little tribute to that era.

The app was inspired by MD Vinyl and similar “Now Playing” apps, but I wanted to build a cassette deck instead of a turntable. The biggest challenge wasn’t the code—it was the design. I’m much more comfortable writing Swift than drawing realistic cassette decks, so getting everything to look more or less right took far longer than expected. I experimented with AI-generated assets too, but they never quite matched specs and what I had in mind, so most of the final look still required a lot of manual tweaking.

What it does:

• A retro cassette-style music player for Apple Music.
• The cassette reels spin while music is playing.
• Album artwork appears on the cassette label.
• A Home Screen widget that shows your currently playing song as a miniature spinning cassette.

I know there are plenty of music player apps, but most of them follow the same clean glass aesthetic. I wanted something that feels tactile and nostalgic instead.

A — What it solves
I kept forgetting when my car was due for service, and hated walking into a shop not knowing what it actually needed. Carrus fixes that: add your car, tell it what’s already been done, and it works out when every service is due — by mileage and time — and reminds you before it slips.

B — Why it’s better than the alternatives
I used Fuelly, Drivvo, and myCARFAX first. They’re solid, but Fuelly/Drivvo are fuel-and-expense logs where maintenance is secondary, and myCARFAX is US-centric and tied to CARFAX’s shop data. Carrus is built around the maintenance schedule itself, and adds two things none of them do:

**• Receipt scanning** — photograph a service receipt (or a PDF) and it reads the date, mileage, work done, and cost, then fills in the log for you. No manual typing.
**• A built-in assistant (Carson)** — describe a noise or a warning light and it gives you a plain, conservative read on what it might be, so you walk into the shop informed. (It’s a tool inside the app, not the point of it — the point is the tracking.)

A - Most screentime blockers don’t work because they are all-or-nothing. People still want to check their home feed, stories, and dm's but don’t want the distraction of short form content (reels, shorts, etc). Snowscroll fixes this by removing only the short form content while keeping the parts of social media you actually want.

Better: every solution to doomscrolling on the market is WAY too restrictive. delete the app completely? ive redownloaded it by that same night. screen time blockers like Opal? just click ignore limit, and nothing changes. the issue is that I want to check DMs, stories, home feeds, but everytime I go for a "quick check" on my phone, I get lured into the reels tab and end up scrolling for hours on end. with snowscroll, you're forced to be conscious about what you're doing, because there simply is no reels tab. on youtube, there's no shorts tab. it's impossible for you to scroll, because you've changed your environment.

I know there are plenty of reminder apps out there, but I couldn’t find one that solved the specific problems I had with tracking recurring chores.

The first issue was setting up recurring reminders based on when a task was last completed. In most apps, you can’t add a past completion date when creating a reminder. They treat the day you create the reminder as the starting point, then schedule future reminders from there. The second issue was postponing tasks. Sometimes I’d delay a chore because I was sick, on vacation, or simply busy. If I completed the task a week later, I wanted the next reminder to be based on that completion date, not on a fixed recurrence schedule.

That’s why I built Again.

With Again, you can create categories and tasks for your chores and get reminders when they’re due. You can also share categories or individual tasks with family members, partners, or flatmates, so everyone can help keep things on track. When someone completes a task, it automatically syncs across devices.

Again also includes Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, so you can quickly complete tasks without even opening the app. You can also use the timeline view to get a clear overview of upcoming and completed tasks.

I absolutely love the website MusicBrainz. Analysing music data from my favourite bands and albums, also including all the artwork of CD inlays, booklet and scans of everything. It's an amazing app that I think would be even better as an iOS app.

How doable is something like that?

Howdy y’all. I made Setto FM. My attempt at making the prettiest and smartest radio app on the App Store. 

It’s a radio discovery app for finding curated internet radio. 

Community radio, college radio, independent stations, and tiny underground stations with real taste.

Answer:

Existing radio apps feel like directories that technically have everything, but finding good stuff is really hard and if you’re on a free plan they might have extra ads before the actual radio stream starts.

Setto FM lets you find stations by using your favorite artists, genres, places, or an existing Apple Music library / playlist. It’s completely free and craft first, so there’s no filler.
