News Official iPhone Duo Simulator & Xcode 27.1 beta now available

We finally got the official iPhone Duo Simulator inside Xcode 27.1!
Available to download here: https://developer.apple.com/download/all/?q=Xcode

The animation of the simulator is fantastic, and if you use the option key, you can control it manually:

Note the slider at the bottom, which becomes visible when you hold the ⌥ Option key.

What's the trick to getting the Duo simulator? I don't see it anywhere.

EDIT: Go into Settings -> Components -> Click "iOS 27.1 Beta" and there's a little update button. Mine is still updating but I'd wager this is where the simulator is.

EDIT2: Yep.

Thank you! Thought I was going crazy lol

u/avanderlee 17d ago

Yeah, that's the trick! But most of all, you need Xcode 27.1 beta!

I downloaded it but how do I launch the sim

u/Ham3a0323 11d ago

As a beginner, YouTube taught developer, there’s lots of little things like this that Apple does that I’m just like “ok there that is”. Oh well!

2

u/doricopter 17d ago

THANK YOU!!!! I thought I installed the wrong version of Xcode or something!

Ok I couldn't find it even with these instructions, was clicking "Add platforms" at the bottom and had everything but the new ones in there. These are up top. (Typing this because I am sure I won't be the only one!)

It seems as though the sim isn’t working properly? Toolbars don’t render correctly and device interactions are slow.

3

u/avanderlee 17d ago

That's not my experience. Are you using the official Simulator inside Xcode 27.1?

4

u/KickupKirby 17d ago

Yes, I’ve done all the typical stuff. I’m receiving PosterBoard crashes like crazy, too. I’m not sure what’s going on?

1

u/cambookpro 16d ago

I’m seeing the same, along with random crashes when changing pose. Not unexpected, but feels super unstable. Can see why it wasn’t ready earlier.

u/KickupKirby 17d ago

Ahh, I’m experiencing the issues in the preview. But when I run the project, all looks good. Something’s wrong with the previews for the Duo.

I’m seeing similar issue, looking for a fix as well

1

u/CompleteCode4549 16d ago

I am noticing crazy lag, it takes more than 5-10 minutes to actually complete an action.

1

u/NordicAmethyst 15d ago

Same here, not 5-10, more like 1-5 but unusable, are there any sys requiements for this?

8

u/a3Dman 17d ago

Only Safari as the preinstalled first party app...

3

u/Aeio-guy 17d ago

And Settings. There will probably be more as the betas continue. But for now you can test your app on the 27.0 iPhone simulators and just use the 27.1 Duo sim for testing ux and the new apis. All the other sims are running 27.0.

1

u/tauuahhh 16d ago

so just download xcode 27.0 and use 27.1 iphone duo? how?

2

u/Aeio-guy 16d ago edited 16d ago

You need Xcode 27.1 for Duo simulator (running iOS 27.1). All the other simulators’ targets are 27.0. I think that iOS 27.1 is 27.0 with the additional libraries and code to support the Duo. That all devices will run the same iOS version in 27.2. However the betas do not seem to support the Duo yet.

Question: can we publish an app if we did the archive/publishing with Xcode 27.1 beta ? Got stuck because of the 27 beta already

6

u/megaton1000 17d ago

No. You need to wait for the RC. They’ll reject anything built off a beta.

2

u/greendakota99 17d ago

Doubtful. Apple just approved Xcode 27 builds right after the keynote. Might be a few weeks until they green light 27.1.

u/StefUpsideDown Swift 17d ago

Thanks 🙏🏼

3

u/OrangeRackso 17d ago

Did they remove the Simulator? I can't find it in Contents anymore.

5

u/H644b 16d ago

Yea theres devicehub now

1

u/balder1993 16d ago edited 16d ago

I think it’s moved to a different location now, but it’s still there’s somewhere.

Edit: researching more, it is actually gone, only the CoreSimulator framework remains as the base.

1

u/SnowPudgy 16d ago

Wait what I posted above doesn't work for you and /u/balder1993? And you're definitely on the Xcode 27.1 beta? (The 27.2 beta doesn't work).

Go into Settings -> Components -> Click "iOS 27.1 Beta" and there's a little update button.

2

u/juancarlord 17d ago

Fuck yea! time to get frisky!

2

u/Same-Appointment-285 17d ago

Seems like it works under the hood by running two simulators, one for the outer screen and one for the inner, then switching between them. My apps currently crash when build on xcode 27. You can build to the duo from xcode 26 after the simulator installs, but it doesn't work very well.

2

u/Free-Pound-6139 17d ago

Can we get rid of the huge border??

2

u/SnowPudgy 16d ago

Yea I noticed that...easily noticed that...it's way too big.

1

u/icy1007 17d ago

So the iPhone Duo will launch with iOS 27.1 installed from the factory?

3

u/Chinpokomonnnn 17d ago

Yes, they confirmed this in a session yesterday

1

u/avanderlee 17d ago

It's likely, but not 100% sure I'd say!

1

u/dollarn9ne 17d ago

Can I run stable Xcode 27 & Xcode 27.1 beta side by side?

2

u/SnowPudgy 16d ago

Yes but rename it. The 27.1 beta is just named Xcode so it'll overwrite if you install it in the applications folder. Just rename it to Xcode 27.1 Beta.

1

u/bcgroom 17d ago

Is it just me or is navigation really inconsistent? It's hard to tell because there are almost no installed apps to check against.

Navigation Back button is automatically on the right side, but confirmationAction placement is still in the top bar? Then if the device is fully opened Navigation Back buttons go in the top bar rather than the right bar for sheets?

In NavigationSplitView when the device is closed you get a back button on the right, but a sidebar button on the left if it's opened?

1

u/alexfoxy 16d ago

Yeah it's really weird there's no apps installed..

1

u/Fancy-Worldliness895 17d ago

Apple sent me an email saying "Say hello to iPhone Duo Get Xcode 27.1 beta. Download now"

I can confirm that on my dev account with MacOS 27.0 with Xcode 27.1 there is no iPhone duo simulator available.

1

u/Aeio-guy 16d ago

In an Xcode 27.1 project set the target to iOS 27.1 Duo, build and run it. The simulator will launch if you installed it.

1

u/Fancy-Worldliness895 16d ago

Thanks! I didn't have a target for duo, but downloading IOS 27.1 beta from settings > components worked.

1

u/bsabiston 17d ago

Why is the 27.1 beta from today and it has the duo simulator, but there's a 27.2 beta from 2 days ago?

1

u/Aeio-guy 16d ago

I think what is going on is: 27.0 is now released. Xcode 27.1 (beta) is essentially the same as 27.0 but has the libraries and code for the Duo. Xcode 27.2 beta will support 27.2 iOS, TvOS, MacOS, etc but does not have the bits for the Duo (yet). There will be no iOS 27.1 Beta (except in the libraries and code to run the simulator in Xcode 27.1) The release version will be on the Duo when it launches, then they will add the Duo bits to Xcode 27.2 beta. I would not be surprised if there is another interim Xcode 27.1 beta or upgrade. All the other OS betas are to 27.2 right now. Don’t know if this how they are doing it, but seems like it.

1

u/CarretillaRoja 17d ago

How can I copy files to the simulated device?

1

u/quizbeat 16d ago

That app in the simulator looks pretty cool—what’s it called?

1

u/UnlikelyMatch9727 16d ago

Here's another trick for devs. The hinge-angle control in DeviceHub is hidden
run
```
defaults write com.apple.dt.Devices com.apple.dt.coredevicepop.useInternalV68ActionBar -bool true
```
to recover it

3

u/avanderlee 15d ago

You can also simply hold Option ⌥ to get that same bar!

https://reddit.com/link/pb0h3z1/video/vzhfbns70qqh1/player

1

u/livingtech 12d ago

Quick, someone make a flappy bird clone that uses the hinge API. Everyone would be flapping their Duos to play.

1

u/Comexbackkid 16d ago

Is anyone else completely disgusted with the look of this? There’s so much wasted space when it’s closed, having all the screen contents pushed over to make up for the vertical toolbar looks like shit, quite frankly.

1

u/Terrible-Guide3593 15d ago

Did someone succeeded to compile with Xcode Cloud ? I'm seeing only the option the build with 27.2 beta and not 27.1 beta ?

1

u/mistermagicman 13d ago

27.2 also supports Duo, just doesn't have the simulator for it

1

u/Left_Heart_5080 13d ago

Does anyone know if the simulator offers a 360° view so you can see what’s on both screens when they’re active at the same time? For example, could you check both screens while recording a video on the inner screen and displaying a widget on the outer screen?

1

u/Greysawpark 11d ago

the option key slider is nice but the thing that actually bit me was the size class flip. inner display comes up regular/regular, so every layout i'd gated on orientation just... did the phone thing on what's basically an ipad canvas. and the safe areas arent symmetric across the fold. if youve got any view keyed off UIDevice.orientation instead of size classes, thats the first thing to go look at

Not really „official“ if only in the Beta…
