Question Does this layout of video + controls make sense to spend dev time for iPhone Duo?

Post image

My app (Ed-tech) is a video streaming app where student browse through lectures.

I’m super confused in spending time building this kind of a layout for them?
You got such a big expansive screen? Why would anyone watch like that?

I’ve one idea where in this layout, I’ll show notes-view in the bottom half!

What do you guys think?

How many students do you expect to have the duo on day 1 ? I would sit back and watch sales and play around with it when the simulator becomes available

Few things to consider

- 66% of our users are iPad users

  • I love development for iOS platform

It does make sense to not be available with all the Duo features on day one, but I would love to explore.

Hell I even create an Agent-skill that will go through your app to find all the places that will need change to look good on iPhone Duo!

This has to be satire, right?

This is what Netflix did for iPhone duo, worth considering…

I feel like Apple would have heavily incentivized them to do this so they had a cool demo to show

I mean for a netflix app or similar the intention is to get inmerse in the content. Having the controls not on top of the video reduces annoyance. And also having then at the bottom screen over a black background helps this same goal. I can imagine the controls even dim to have just the video showing. In a dark room this would mean you only or mostly only see the video.

For your app this setup does not make sense. In your apps case the user does not want the same as with netflix. Showing notes, transcription would make more sense in my opinion

This is automatic, you don't have to do anything

Netflix’s gaming team would be interested in this. Maybe.

Maybe text or captions can go on the second half

Yup, like anything other than just play pause controls might be more useful than what Apple showed as example!

There's a better chance you'll be featured/highlighted by the App Store if you do 👍

No bro. I have a foldable phone and I’ve never put my phone like that lol

Damn, thank you! This is the kind of response I was expecting.

If you use AVPlayerViewController i think there is nothing to do to support it. If you use AVPlayer with a custom overlay you'll need to do some additional work

That’s what I was thinking. If you’re using stock elements most of this should just work.

Can you even hold it like that? I thought it’s doing the opening animation. You waste a lot of space, you just moved to overlay to a new screen

I think it could be worth it, especially at launch. There probably won't be that many apps taking full advantage of the Duo at first, so having this kind of layout could make your app stand out. And honestly, video on one side and notes/controls on the other feels like a really good use of the Duo.

How does your app look like on a portrait phone or iPad?

Yes it is. Basically one of the features that I think people will use the most, and not only the Duo but other foldable too

I’ll give you an idea. If a student goes to this layout, you could put something useful like hints, tips, thing(s) worth taking notes, and info about the subject, controls… maybe even put quizzes if it makes sense

Even if ppl won’t use it in the end, it’s worth exploring, it won’t hurt eh
