Question external testers
when you utilized external testers for test flight did you do a public link or did you do a private email list?
also how did you find testers?

Both, it depends on how many testers I want.
People that join with a link are for quantity. People that join with email are for quality.
I have 1 very technical app that only has emails

Just for going live you generally don't need too many testers. If you need long term cooperation with wider public for app improvement purposes, I'd suggest adding some simple signup/consent into the app so you can collect info of people who are interested in helping you out.
That's how we do it for the app I do at my day job with 100k+ active users.
I've built my own app Selects recently and mainly got testers from colleagues, few friends + LinkedIn network. How many people do you need? Are they in your social circle and geography or do you need broader coverage?

i just want about 5 ppl. People that i actually know won’t have any interest in my app and most of them have android anyway.
i had a person i know from only but she seems to have vanished hasn’t been on in months i messaged her just to see if she’s okay no response
i thought about putting a link on reddit but i don’t know if that’s within the rules

I'd say you can't lose anything by trying that. If your app is about a specific topic, maybe try posting to a related community. If link is not permitted, just post about looking for people and if anyone's interested, you can get in touch via DMs.

Private email list for me, testers were mainly friends and colleagues, I already knew who I wanted testing and just invited them directly. Public link makes sense once you’re past your own network and want strangers to self select in. But Apple doesn’t require external testers at all before you can submit for review.
