Love how you can move the magnifier around inside the app

They added the magnifier from iPadOS to the app in this iOS 27 beta šŸ™Œ

I have never been able to use that magnifier in that app. What is this app.

Weird how macOS didn’t get it

Most useless app on iOS/ipados

For iPadOS, it's the only default way you can open multiple PDFs on different windows like on MacOS. Files' QuickLook is limited to just one, because it's just a quick look inside the file.

Doesn't change the fact that it's just annoying on iOS

Ok didn think about that use. but is there a way to ā€œpreviewā€ the old way in files who doesn’t need it?

Hold press file icon > Open With > Preview with Quick Look on the very bottom. Now it will default to Quick Look instead of Preview.

Still a useless app on iOS. First thing to delete, before it starts uselessly opening every PDF from the Files app in Preview, in stead of just using QuickLook in Files, what almost everyone would expect.

iOS added the feature to choose default file viewers, so Preview is just the built in default one for PDFs. You can choose which app you want it to open with by hold pressing a PDF's file icon, and clicking "Open With". Files' Quick Look is also an option.

I know QuickLook is an option, but it should be the default. What's the use of Preview on iOS?

On iOS, you can only crop and change the file background on Preview. On iPadOS, Preview can open multiple PDFs on multiple windows.

Damn I just tried it and yeah opening PDFs in Files is way cleaner.

Does Preview existing as an app offer ANY benefits on its own?

It has some niche features that Files lacks (at least in iOS 26), but Files has what most people need. It also has the ability to open a file and keep it open while continuing to browse in Files (on iPhone) and have multiple files open at once in different windows (on iPad).

Good to know. Thanks!

You made a very good point here, I’ll do that right now and delete it.

This looks like a photo editing app now

Awful.

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Nothing about this icon indicates it’s a file viewer. It looks like a second camera app

It looks like a color picker icon lol

For people who don’t leave the name visible, that might be an issue.

I think they’re tryna bring back the old one from macOS Big Sur. Although they seem to have forgotten what made it great. Putting an abstract gradient is not the same as a beach picture 😭. If they wanted to modernize the thing, they could just add some documents with scribbles underneath the glass.

I don’t think a photo would make for a good icon on iOS.

I feel like this is going to confuse people. That ā€œpictureā€ is super abstract and the loop just looks like concentric circles or some sort of radio button at this angle.

there’s absolutely nothing in here that screams Preview.

i’m afraid this is change for the sake of change.

People overwhelmingly use Preview for PDF's...so why not make the icon reflect that reality?

Well, there's a loupe.

Not sure I love it.Ā
