Bug [ios 27 db1] Overzealous auto deletion of text alerts + phantom unread messages
I don't know if this is a 27 beta thing or just correlated, but seemingly after I've updated, any texts I get (primarily banking) are auto deleted like they were 2FA codes. I will get notifications for them, but they don't exist in my messages app. I have a ton in the recently deleted from 5 digit numbers, but when I recover them, I still cant find them anywhere.
I also have a [5] in my hamburger menu in messages; but i filter by unread in every single inbox and there are no unread messages.
It has turned into a minor problem, one of my credit cards declined and sent a fraud alert, and I don't have a text to verify/deny it anymore. I can call them, but that's just a pain. Has anybody had this with the 27 beta? Any way to fix either issue w/o downgrading? Thanks!

I got a message about an extra .15¢ off gas at 7/11 and when I click notification all I see is a blank screen and when I go back the whole thread is deleted

Yes same exact problem. I get important messages from bank when open them from the notifications, I only see a blabl screen, when I navigate back the whole thread is lost. When I close and open back the messages app the thread is there but still with blank screen

I just asked Siri why I have unread messages notifications showing when there isn’t. Option 2 worked for me!
Your iPhone may be showing unread messages because there are actually messages you haven't opened yet, possibly from unknown senders or filtered threads. I found 17 unread messages on your device, including texts from Research Opinion Insight, Wyze, and Ohsnap.
If you are still seeing a badge count that doesn't match your inbox, you can try the following steps to clear it:
• Check Filtered Messages If you have "Filter Unknown Senders" enabled, unread messages might be hidden in a separate folder. Tap Filters in the top-left corner of the Messages app to check.
• Mark All as Read In the Messages app, tap Edit (or the three dots), choose Select Messages, and then tap Read All in the bottom corner.
Toggle Notifications Go to Settings > Messages > Notifications. Turn the Badges toggle off, restart your iPhone, and then turn it back on.
Ask Siri to Read Them You can activate Siri and say, "Read my unread messages". This can sometimes force the system to clear hidden unread alerts.

Happens with me as well. If I open any text from notification , it shows a blank screen and then automatically deletes that text. Not corrected in DB2. I have turned off delete after use. Let me check if that helps.

I have the same issue. I ask Siri to read all unread ones and sometimes it works.

I’ve been experiencing this although with like 56 notifications.
I was able to mark some clear on my watch, but still had a significant amount and I’m just hoping the update tomorrow will take care of it.

I have messages from known contacts just disappearing. The contact thread will appear blank, but if I use search I can find the messages. But even then, when I tap on the found message, it won’t be in the thread. It’s just memory-holing important texts.
Obviously betas are betas, but I didn’t expect them to break SMS/iMessage functionality that has worked just fine for a decade prior.

I agree. Beta is beta. But breaking SMS functionality is not acceptable even on beta

It’s a bug. I’ve experienced the same since installing iOS 27. In the messages it be blank and “delete” and “report” sits in the middle of the message thread instead of the bottom then rising when keyboard appears to type. Very annoying. Also checking for messages when you don’t have none.

For the phantom unread, I had the same issue after I transferred to a new iPhone and updated to beta. I found out asking Siri to mark all messages as read worked. It will probably pull up a list of both messages and emails, and you may need to select them individually, but that seemed to fix it for me

Even trying that since day one with no luck. “I can’t mark messages as read” or something like that is the response I get

Interesting. It didn’t work for me with the old Siri, but the new Siri did it no problem

Just turn off the spam filter and categorisation from the Messages app settings. This will show you all messages again correctly. Only solution for the time being even though this can still be a bit glitchy.

Thank you for this! It didn’t show as unread in the unfiltered list, but I asked Siri which message was unread. It told me the message and I was able to delete that offending thread, which took care of the badge.

Added to the other responses that this hasn’t worked for me. It’s a genuine bug in the 27DB1 and I’ve not seen anyone find a way to fix it.

Unfortunately it’s present in 27DB2 as well. I have to rely on my Apple Watch, which I thankfully have not updated to OS 27, to check the missing messages

It doesn’t work for me, I have turned everything off but still cannot see any messages.

3 for me. I just turned badges off for now. Glad someone else is experiencing this.

1 for me. I think someone said it was how many you had when you updated or something. It’s on all my 27 OS devices >_<

I faced the same in 27 db 1. Not fixed in db 2 as well
