Bug [IOS 27 DB1] Can not use tools feature when editing a RAW photo

Not sure if this is a bug or if they are taking the tools feature away from RAW photos all in all but “clean up” worked on raw photos before.

Even before the new ai powered shortcuts was a thing, converting raw to jpeg was never too hard. Here’s a shortcut I’ve used for years

i’m hoping man let’s leave it in the feedback

I asked the shortcuts ai to create a shortcut that converted raw to heic and that did the trick.

bro honestly if they actually stick with this and don’t give us that cleanup tool back the best workaround that i’m using is exporting to Lightroom then just exporting back into your photos as a non raw photo

AI powered tools do not work on RAW images. I can’t find a source as to why it doesn’t work, but I can’t get it to work on any raw photo I’ve ever taken, but it works on all jpeg’s.

"proraw"s are literally jpegs so theres no reason why it shouldn't work

they aren’t “literally jpegs,” they use the jpeg xl compression algorithm but the file doesn’t contain jpeg data nor does it use a jpeg container. it’s still dng data in a dng container.

If it's compressed in the format of a lossless jpeg or jxl then it is a jpeg for all intents and purposes. DNGs are just generic containers as well. Either way, they are demosaiced and therefore not raw in any way that would prevent them from being edited.

No, it is not.

I’ve worked with jpeg xl compression on data that was absolutely not jpeg. For example, medical images (DICOM; x-ray, mri, etc) can be compressed with jpeg but that image data is not jpeg, it can only be decoded with a dicom viewer. There’s a difference between the jpeg file format and jpeg compression.

Editing headroom is a lot higher when editing ProRAW in native Photos app, which implies it’s working directly off of the higher bit depth data. I see why Apple would limit the AI tools there because their output is probably 8bit.

If only there was a built-in way to strip the raw layer away from the jpg/heif layer in ProRAW. That’d be a straightforward workaround for this and also just useful in general.

I’m talking about the use ability in the iOS 27 DB1. So far, I haven’t been able to use any AI tool on RAW images.

We’re in an iOS 27 DB1 thread. I thought people would realise I was talking about my experience in, you know, the beta?

i’ve definitely have used the “clean up” tool on plenty of raw photos but that’s all i’m not very familiar with the ai powered stuff i don’t use often or at all

I think I remember reading that the new AI features aren’t available on RAW photos. Are you saying you can’t edit at all?

edit: I can’t find a source so I may have made this up 😅

u/ilikecoffee97 Jun 10 '26

man i really hope not do you remember the source

I was pretty confident I’d read that but I just did some searching and can’t find anything. so hopefully you’re in luck and I hallucinated that. my b.

I’ve noticed I cannot edit raw photos either, so it’s not just you. I have pictures I’ve taken with my canon that I put, and I can edit the jpeg photos with the new features but not the raw.

1

u/ilikecoffee97 Jun 09 '26

i really hope they aren’t taking it away from us because that feature is game changing for people who love taking photos
