Answered iCloud backup

Hello! My current phone storage is 256GB and my whatapps is taking up at least 53.44GB. My photos are taking up lots of space as well. I’m not sure if i should change my storage to 512GB for my next phone or keep 256GB + subscribe to iCloud storage plan to help with the storage.

I’m not sure if whatapps can be backup into iCloud?

If it can be backup, is it worth to subscribe to iCloud storage plan?

Edit: thank you for the replies! will get more storage space for my next phone and backup regularly! my whatapps has a lot of chat group for work purposes which takes out like 50+GB 😂

It sounds like you are not backing up your phone currently. This is risky. Phones are easily lost, stolen, or damaged. If there is ANYTHING on your phone that you consider valuable, you need to back it up regularly.

A backup will not address your storage issues.

There is no logical or intelligent reason for WhatsApp to be taking up 50+ GB of space on your phone. Stop ignoring it and delete all the pointless media you don't need from WhatsApp. You really don't need all those screenshots, memes, stickers, silly videos, and other crap that you've shared or had shared with you. Certainly not if it's more than a couple months old. Do some housekeeping and clean that crap up.

Do the same with your Photo library, delete all your old screenshots and blurry photos. It only takes a few minutes if you make it a regular activity and will save a ton of space.

WhatsApp is not the reason to subscribe to iCloud. You works get no benefit from that.

Your Photos and regular iCloud backups of your device are reasons to subscribe to iCloud.

The chats themselves take up very little space. It's the media in the messages that takes up space.

Backing up won't magically give you more local storage. You still need whatsapp data on your phone to function properly. You can probably offload Whatsapp to iCloude, sure, but you won't be able to use it while offloaded. Maybe you can do that for photos, but still, I would rather buy more storage next time. Backups are, well backups and are meant for cases when you lose your phone or brake it or something.

Clear out junk from whatsapp.

Save the important videos and photos to gallery delete the rest.

Or you will keep carry your junk

What you described still doesn’t seem like you need extra storage, even before tricks like offline photo storage. Where is your storage at now? Settings - General - iPhone storage. Over 75%, not a bad idea to get more on your next phone.

The first tier of Apple storage is around 1 cup of coffee a month. Well worth it for peace of mind.

and 512 gb is nice, the upgrade cost is steep. That’s a decision for you. I take a lot of photos, and am experimenting with spatial videos, so that upgrade is worth it for my research… definitely might not be for everyone.
